SOLVED. YA/Middle grade book told from the POV of a stray cat, features a lot of violence against animals. Read around 1997. [s]

I checked this book out of the YA section of my local library around 1997, but I would say it was probably published in the 80s, I think by a British author. Had a tabby cat on the cover and 11-yr-old me loved cats, so off I went with it.

But this book featured a lot of disturbing scenes where its cat characters were killed or tormented. I remember there's a prolonged scene with an animal testing clinic, and one cat's eyelids are cut off to do a study on sleeplessness. Then the cats are all freed by animal rights activists who break into the facility.

Anyway, trying to recall the author/title.
