Kim (kimborams) | 1568 comments I don't know if this is the right thread to post this query on but...

on the Personal Challenges thread, my lengthy Personal Challenge for 2024 has a character limit which is already down to 300 left - yet, the identical Challenge which I have posted on another group (All About Books) is showing as having 3000 characters left on that one at present.
Can this be brought into line at all?

That's very strange Kim. The thing I'd try first would be to copy the complete post in that thread that only has 300 left, then delete the whole lot, then repost, and see if it makes a difference. Almost like turning your phone off then on again to reboot. I'm not sure what else you could do, but perhaps support might be worth it. Good luck!

Hi Brenda. Just tried your suggestion above but it hasn't made any difference - still only 300 or so characters left!

Kim, I had problems with posting fairly recently after an Apple iOS update. If you have access to Goodreads on a different computer it may be worth trying to post from that in case it’s some strange bug. For a while I could only copy & paste small amounts of text using my iPad, but my MacBook allowed a copy & paste of whole documents in Goodreads. Neither gave me any information about the number of characters, but your problem seems similar. Very frustrating while it lasted, but the next update corrected the problem for me so perhaps I was lucky.

Sorry to hear. Perhaps what Tr1sha has suggested might help.

Not a bug, but putting it in two places so it's seen :)

For those of you who own a Kindle Fire, it seems Goodreads no longer supports the app on same. https://help.goodreads.com/s/question...

Poor customer service from Amazon, especially as it's their kindle!

I was having issues yesterday, and again today. It comes up with error, try again. And just the generic GR page. It definitely doesn't like something!! And thanks Phrynne, I'm glad it's not just me!

It's not raining here in New Zealand, but I can't edit anything either! Yes, slooooooow, and it just keeps returning to the home page. I was wanting to edit a review I wrote 1st April, but according to GR, it doesn't exist, yet it is copied and pasted to NG. 🤷‍♀️

Frustrating Sandy! Perhaps GR is doing administration which is causing the slowness! Who would know - they never advertise it!

Janelle | 635 comments GR is really weird for me at the moment. When I go to a book page it says I need to sign in, click on sign in and it takes me to the home page where I’m already signed in (I guess because I never signed out). Frustrating and odd!

Icewineanne | 267 comments GR has been so frustrating today. I can’t ‘Like’ anyone’s reviews, nor add any books to my list, pages often refuse to fully load. Not sure what’s happening but hope they fix it Stat.
Oddly it’s also raining buckets here in Toronto. Perhaps it’s ‘raining all over the world’? 🎶

I’m glad it isn’t just me! I’m in the UK. Clicking on a book in GR shows me the price in US dollars, signs me out of GR & tells me to sign in to Amazon. Since then I’ve had an Amazon alert that “someone” has tried to sign in to my account (from the area where I am & at the correct time, so it was me signing in). I’m going out now, hope it sorts itself out…

Same Janelle! It was doing it with a book I was trying to review. So I ended up going down to where I could click on "my review" and it took me there, already signed in! Another of GRs famous glitches!!

Hi Brenda - I just worked out what the difference was between the two Challenges! On Aussie Readers, I had posted the books as 'links' whereas on the other one I had just posted a list of books without actually doing book/author links. When I corrected this, it reduced the 'free characters' from 3000-odd to 300-odd. So clearly the 'link' takes up a lot more characters!!

Welcome to my world...but it sounds like yours is much more frequent. It usually happens if I've been hot spotting from my phone on my laptop in a cafe.

I did contact Goodreads about it, and their solution was to change browsers. (I use Safari.) Haven't had to do it for a couple of months now. Haven't changed browsers.

Krystal (krystallee6363) | 2304 comments Today I had to confirm my identity by doing one of those horrible, 'type in the letters and numbers you see' things. It took me three goes because the letters were so distorted! GR is really taking authenticating accounts a little far now I think.

I nearly had to use the verbal option the other day for the same reason. I should have done it anyway just to see if it worked as designed.

message 885: by Krystal (new)

Krystal (krystallee6363) | 2304 comments I'm having a lot of issues in the last 24hrs of things not working - shelf and date options not appearing when writing a review, the 'load more' option at the bottom of notifications not working, and trying to update notification preferences. Very frustrating!

message 886: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 79989 comments Mod
Krystal, that just happened to me. I can't put the date started or finished on my review, no shelf showing within the review page (I did it off the cover pic option to bypass that) but I can't work out how to date it when every time I click on it, it jumps to the top. I'll check out the "help" section in a minute! So frustrating..

Yep I'm having to try find work arounds, like adjusting things in the general 'my books' list, but it is driving me nuts! Of course it happens when I finally get time to write and update all my reviews!

I did that Jonetta, but the "shelf" still wasn't there, or the ability to put start date and finish. Even adding that I own a book isn't working either... And yes, these things always happen on the weekend!!

I received an email back from support, but with so many others affected, what he said isn't really relevant.

I'm sorry to hear about this. If you're on the desktop site or mobile site, you may be able to resolve the issue by clearing your browser's cache or by using Chrome or Firefox browsers or by troubleshooting other possible browser issues. If you're using a Goodreads app, you may be able to resolve the issue by updating to the latest app or device version, or by uninstalling and reinstalling the app on your device.

Please feel free to let me know if you have further questions, or refer to our Help article I’m experiencing a bug or issue on Goodreads. What should I do? for more information.

I emailed back and suggested that as quite a number of people are having the same issue, that it's probably a GR glitch. So we'll see what happens next.

Received a second email:

Thanks for your reply and for providing confirmation. I would need to have this reported to our developers. Please provide all of the information below as soon as possible to help with the investigation:

*What is the software version on your device?
Click on the relevant device type for steps to find this information: computer, Android, or iOS.
*For the desktop site and mobile site: Which browser are you using, and what is the browser version?
*When did you first experience the issue, and how often do you experience it?
*Is this happening on a single book page or every book page? *Please include direct links (URLs) to all affected pages.
*Please send screenshots of what you’re seeing.

I have done as asked in the above and just sent it off. Perhaps those of you who are experiencing similar issues could contact them as well.

On a laptop, using Chrome and Windows 10, I've had the same issue when writing a review (no shelves, dates, etc). But when viewing My Books (or one of my shelves), I select the SETTINGS option above the list and select to show Shelves and Date Started and Date Read.

You can save this setting to keep permanently, or while that menu is still showing, go down the list and edit the shelves and dates there. If you add a date, click SAVE, although the page won't show the date you've saved until you refresh the page. (That's just weird. The same thing happens with notes.)

Of course, you may have to start the process over to get all your shelves to show, etc, but at least it's a way of editing. I have a Just Read shelf for the last dozen or so books so I can see easily check what I forgot to do.

I hope that's not too confusing and I hope GR sorts it out soon. Good luck with your mission!
