According to a report I read, Amazon bought the Goodreads site simply to mine the data (users) and have not put in the investment to improve its capability or usability. Sounds about right don't you think?

Definitely Judith!

message 753: by Rowan (new)

Rowan MacDonald | 404 comments That sounds about right, Judith. Makes me sad. I love Goodreads, so it's frustrating to see it like this with constant glitches.

This particular glitch is becoming very tiresome.

Mine will happen a lot with this Sarah, I re try with some users and give up. Then with others it will work, so to me, it's very hit and miss. Very frustrating when you are trying to work out whether to accept a friend invite etc!

Some threads in some groups are slowly being fixed. The reviews thread in our group is okay now.

Clare Snow (claresnow) | 521 comments Is it possible to recommend a book to a friend? Or is that something they removed?

It was something they said would be removed. That being said, I still get recs every now and then so there must be a loophole somewhere.

I haven't received a recommendation in months! Hadn't thought about it until now though...

I worked out how to do it, if anyone's interested.
In the list under your profile pic, choose Friends recommendations.
Then, on the right side of the page you can choose Send Give recommendation

Krystal (krystallee6363) | 2304 comments Can we turn off recommendations?!

message 768: by Suz (new)

Suz | 4428 comments Hi all, I may be asking something that's been discussed, but as it's never happened to me I have probably taken no notice.. I have completely lost a review (or GR has removed it, bug, bot, whatever). It wasn't negative, it was a five star review of a book that I loved. What to do. Nothing I suppose. Ugh.

message 769: by Suz (new)

Suz | 4428 comments Krystal wrote: "Can we turn off recommendations?!"

This is doable through edit profile, choose settings and go from there. Settings and emails each have their own section. I haven't done this for a while, though. But I've always had email notifications turned off, because I don't want them.

I had that happen recently Suz - I knew I had read and reviewed the book but it wasn't in my library and none of the editions of it showed up as 'read'. I still had a copy of my review saved in Word so I was able to copy it in again. I have no idea how that could have happened.

Let us know the book Suz, so we can check for you.

message 773: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments I haven't lost reviews, Suz, but lately (or maybe I've noticed only lately), when I go to see a list of all the books in an author's series, there will be some I have read that are not marked as read.

It's as if the series link picks up only certain editions, and if I've reviewed an ebook and not the paperback (or whatever), the list shows that title as unread.

I'd suggest looking up the book, then going to the list of ALL EDITIONS and see if anything there is showing as read by you.

Also lately I seem to finding an awful lot multiple entries of the same book, so I keep asking librarians to combine (which they do).

Do let us know which title and author. Brenda can fix anything!

I have also seen the unread books thing Patty. I find that if you fiddle around a bit you can get the books to show as read again.
I haven't experienced a lost review yet but then I have not been looking!

Someone in another group said that's because they're different editions, and that it's always been like that. But I beg to differ as I've only noticed it since the big change...

Suz | 4428 comments Thanks all, I'm just waiting for my laptop to agree with me. Network problems tonight. I saw the teaser of my review in 'community reviews' as there were many comments. (On my phone). If that makes sense, then I went into it on my phone and it wasn't there. It's this book. Many friends commented on it so it was definitely there, at some stage.

See what you think:

The House With All The Lights On

Only 3 editions so I don't hold much hope. It had about 25 likes or something like that.

I remember reading and liking your review Suz. There are 59 likes, and comments saying "great review" etc. So it was there.

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I've just checked to see if there was another which needed combining, but can't see one. I would suggest getting in touch with Support, showing the link to your "review" which is missing the review portion. See if they can locate it. Let us know how you go...

message 783: by Suz (new)

Suz | 4428 comments That's ok, Brenda, you and the collective AR are always spot on. This is the sort of answer you get from support, which I suppose is helpful, if they do again get back to me, I was happy to see they've given my issue a ticket, or it could just be a wider generic one, and they'll add it to the stats, who knows how it works:

Hi Suzanne,
Thanks for providing the additional information. I've checked and confirmed with our Developers that they're already aware of this issue and they're actively working on fixing the problem. I've now added your report to the Developer ticket, so that they have as much information as possible while investigating and implementing a solution to this. In the meantime, I want to apologize for the inconvenience and to thank you for your patience while this is resolved.
I hope I was able to assist you with this issue in the interim. If there is anything else you need assistance with or have any additional follow up questions please let me know as I'd be happy to help.
Best,
Wendy

Did you ever find your review, Suz? I distinctively remember that review of yours. But now can't see it on that book page. I've also had a review 'deleted' lately. No idea which one though Haha

message 790: by Suz (new)

Suz | 4428 comments Nope! I was asked for feedback on the experience and I replied bad, it's not fixed yet. It's very annoying (I know I'm not the only one..), I can't re write it, it's pointless. I guess I can try and think of some of my points.. Now I have started a word doc and add each review to the end of it, it will get very large of course. I remember Carolyn mentioning it. It's another 'job' to do but I suppose no more loss of my work.

Suz, I write each of my reviews on a their own word doc and give the title something like Review-Winnie the Pooh - AA Milne, and then I keep them in a folder for the right month and eventually shift them all to the right year. That way, they are all sorted by title, no matter what, and I can find the day they were created if my folders fail.

Goodreads is fantastic - until it isn't, and I can't remember all the people and plots I've read about, but rereading an old review will bring a lot back (that's why mine are long and have quotes!)

Sorry you've lost that one. I know we can export our book lists, but I wonder if we will ever be able to export reviews. Hmmm....

Whatever you do, do not give up!!

Clare Snow (claresnow) | 521 comments PattyMacDotComma wrote: "I know we can export our book lists, but I wonder if we will ever be able to export reviews..."

I think when it exports reviews are included. I export as an excel file and every data point has a column and the review is one of them (I think)

message 794: by Tr1sha (new)

Tr1sha | 222 comments I usually use my iPad mini for the Goodreads website on Safari. Since an iOS update I’m having problems with copy & paste on Goodreads. In this group we usually post all the details of any completed challenge & until now I just copy & paste my whole post. Similarly, I copy the whole details of a new challenge when I sign up. But now the data gets corrupted. I started my post for the new calendar challenge & could only copy the first 2 months successfully. I tried to add March, which changed to
“march:%0A**%20St%20Patrick's%20Day,%20Mar%2017%3A%20Read%20a%20book%20with%20a%20GREEN%20cover%20(show%20cover)%20OR%20read%20a%20book%20with%20an%20Irish%20character.%0A**%” etc
I tried resetting my iPad & cleared the cache… The result was the same.
Is anyone else having similar problems? Am I missing something obvious?
I used a MacBook successfully to copy & paste a large post in another group a few days ago when the iPad didn’t do it - but my concern is that a future iOS update there too could cause the same issue so I need to resolve it. I have visions of completing a future challenge & having to type every detail again! I’m grateful for any advice.

(I added the comma there, Clare. 🤣)

Yes, I see that GR does export the reviews with all of the HTML markup, although it would need some tweaking to repost it that way. But at least you can copy the column, paste somewhere and fix the punctuation markup that isn't correct. It's sure better than losing the whole thing.

Thanks for that, Clare!

In the meantime, Tr1sha, you might try copying and pasting into a document or an email or another form of some sort and see what happens. What you've posted looks like it's picked up some formatting markup instead of the finished product, so to speak.

I also use a laptop, but sometimes the GR and/or iOS updates don't play nicely together.

message 798: by Tr1sha (new)

Tr1sha | 222 comments Thanks for the helpful advice, Brenda & Patty. I copied a smaller document today by taking it in small sections (& a large one yesterday on MacBook). I will definitely experiment with the formatting as you suggest. It’s encouraging to know that the various updates cause some issues - perhaps another update will help soon!
