The Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Stories
Sorry I was MIA for a few days ladies, it’s been a tough week with little reading. But back on the horse now, although not with the best of stories unfortunately...The Psychologist who wouldn’t do awful things to rats: (view spoiler)
The Beak Doctor: (view spoiler)
My Mother: (view spoiler)
Glad you're back Marleen! I'm sorry you're having a rough week I hope things get better. And I hope you enjoy Sandkings next!I also am having a slow reading week. Partially because half my family is sick and needy, and partially because I'm taking advantage of World of Warcraft's free weekend haha.
I've read one so far today:
The Autopsy: (view spoiler)
Marleen, glad you liked Sandkings! It really was in a good place in this book after a couple of slogs. The Little Dirty Girl: (view spoiler)
The New Rays: (view spoiler)
The Discovery of Telenapota: (view spoiler)
Marleen wrote: "Next up for me:Sandkings: Oh I loved this one! What a great story. I raced through it, it didn’t feel long at all. I’m glad Kress got what he deserved in the end. At one point I feel like the ‘wo..."
Marleen, Have you watched the Game of Thrones series? I think it was something like 7 seasons so it is long but follows most of the books except for the ending, which GRR Martin is still writing (??) My husband and I like to joke that he will never finish it now that the HBO series provided an ending. ;)
I am planning on re-reading the books next year (or some of the books...they are long, best to take them a month or two at a time :) starting with the second book in the series because I have reread the first a few times. The books have a lot more detail/story in them than the series does! If you are interested in reading, we can compare notes if you would like! :)
I had to take a couple days off to try to finish a couple books (here's looking at you, 11/22/63...such a Chunker! ;)My thoughts on:
The Little Dirty Girl: (view spoiler)
The New Rays: (view spoiler)
The Discovery of Telenapota (view spoiler)
Soft (view spoiler)
Bloodchild: (view spoiler)
Alison wrote: "Marleen, Have you watched the Game of Thrones series? "I haven’t, actually. Don’t have access to HBO here. I might try the first book next year, although I really should finish a few ongoing series before starting a new one :) I’ll give you a shout if I do!
I read only one story today because it was pretty long.
The Autopsy: (view spoiler)
I'd love to reread A Song of Ice and Fire but I'd like to do it shortly before Winds of Winter comes out.. so maybe never? The last time I re-read it was for that purpose because it was supposed to come out soon! That was 3 years ago.Soft: (view spoiler)
Bloodchild: (view spoiler)
In the Hills, the Cities: (view spoiler)
SarahKat, I am not sure the Winds of Winter is ever going to be done however, apparently, he is "hard at work on it...isolated in his cabin in the Santa Fe Mountains" as of August 2020 We shall see...:DMy thoughts on:
In the Hills, the Cities: (view spoiler)
GRR Martin has said that before in the last.. what 8 or 9 years since Dance with Dragons. And then he releases like 5 non-Song of Ice and Fire books. I might be exaggerating because I refuse to pay attention to him until he finishes Winds of Winter.Marleen, on the Belonging Kind: (view spoiler)
I'm halfway through "Shades," but I have a minute so I'll update the last two I read. Again, sorry if the titles are off; I don't carry this book around with me. ;)Tainaron: Mailings from Another City: (view spoiler)
Hogfoot Right and Bird-hands: (view spoiler)
Not story-related, but I've noticed in the last few stories a lot more typos and errors than previously. Letters switched around in names, "stop" instead of "step," stuff like that. I wonder if the editors just got tired after 500 pages.
What I read today: The Little Dirty Girl: (view spoiler)
The New Rays: (view spoiler)
The Discovery of Telenapota: (view spoiler)
Shades: (view spoiler)The Function of Dream Sleep: (view spoiler)
Worlds that Flourish: (view spoiler)
I have been reading slowly and have gotten into a routine where I read a story or two with my morning coffee before my husband gets up! We are almost 65% done with this Chunker :DOn another note, I am going to vent: New Mexico just shut down for the next 2 weeks due to the rising cases of Covid...Thanksgiving will be a bust this year, even with local family! :( I think I have "Covid fatigue"!! I have been in a relatively good state through this whole pandemic but the latest closing seems to have gotten me down a bit. I am headed to the grocery store this morning and hoping for few lines! I have feeling Christmas will be a no go (at least for our family...my husband has underlying conditions and he is very wary of getting together with family)! Our kids live in AZ and we haven't seen them in a while and it makes me very sad that we may not for Christmas! Sigh...sigh...just feeling a bit down today...sorry for venting! Reading these stories and comparing notes helps lift my spirits so Thank You, Ladies, for Buddy Reading this with me!! <3
My thoughts on:
Tainaron: (view spoiler)
Hogfoot Right and Bird Hands: (view spoiler)
Shades (view spoiler)
The Function of Dream Sleep (view spoiler)
Alison, my reading routine is late at night mostly, which is not always the best idea for these creepy stories... Maybe I should switch to mornings too :)Sorry you’re having to shut down. We are riding the second wave in a half-lockdown here and the numbers seem to be getting a bit better but I’m trying not to have my hopes up for Christmas plans too much.
I’m still a lot behind you two! My portion of the day:
Soft: (view spoiler)
Bloodchild: (view spoiler)
I try to read in the morning before work when I have time. Otherwise it has to wait until evening, but I try to stay away from it late at night. Although most of these stories aren't as nightmarish as I worried they would be!Alison, I'm sorry you're having a crappy experience with the shutdowns. Not getting to see your kids has got to be really hard! My state hasn't mandated anything whatsoever. The governor just spoke on Friday and called the citizens of Wyoming "knuckleheads" because we aren't taking precautions as much as we should, and he basically said pretty please wear masks.
I am very fortunate in that most of my family that I like lives in town. We don't have big gatherings but we visit occasionally. The only routine thing that I'm missing out on is going to church. They are still having it but I'm watching online so as to not expose myself and my kids to anything. Schools/daycare/work are all open, but that's all we do, with masks.
Today I read:
The Boy in the Tree: (view spoiler)
Family: (view spoiler)
I only finished one story today. I read a big part of the next one (the Tainaron story) but it’s much longer than I anticipated so I’ll have to finish that one tomorrow. In the Hills, the Cities: (view spoiler)
I've been trying to read a little more in this because it's a library book and I think I'm out of renewals by the first week of December. However, I'm worried that forcing myself to read a certain number of pages is hindering some of the enjoyment/focus I'd have otherwise. Argh.I read
His Mouth Will Taste of Wormwood: (view spoiler)
The End of the Garden: (view spoiler)
The Dark: (view spoiler)
Marleen wrote: "I only finished one story today. I read a big part of the next one (the Tainaron story) but it’s much longer than I anticipated so I’ll have to finish that one tomorrow. In the Hills, the Cities: ..."
Love that picture Marleen thanks for sharing!
Thank You, Ladies, for your encouraging words! We all have to deal with this pandemic and I hope You and Yours are staying safe! I am in a better frame of mind today...and I agree with you, Marleen, about the stories containing some sort of virus or eerily quiet cities...I am viewing these stories a bit differently this year (however, stories like that have alway creeped me out a bit :)Marleen, thank you for the image that depicts "In the Hills, In the Cities"...I like visual references like that! :)
SarahKat...We WILL finish this book by the beginning of December!! ;)
My thoughts on:
Worlds That Flourish: (view spoiler)
The Boy in the Tree: (view spoiler)
Today’s stories:Tainaron: Mail from Another City: (view spoiler)
Hogfoot Right and Bird-Hands: (view spoiler)
Alison, on World that Flourish, (view spoiler)Marleen, interesting fact about Tainaron. Maybe the symbolism is like, metamorphosis. Death is just another change sort of thing?
On Hogfoot Right, (view spoiler)
Today I read
Angels in Love: (view spoiler)
The Ice Man: (view spoiler)
Replacements: (view spoiler)
Today's storiesThe Diane Arbus Suicide Portfolio: (view spoiler)
The Country Doctor: (view spoiler)
Last Rites and Resurrections: (view spoiler)
Reading recommendation for you Ladies: I am about 25% into Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre and can hardly put the book down! Great take on the possibility of there being Sasquatch(s) in the Pacific Northwest forests!! Marleen, on Tainaron: (view spoiler)
My thoughts on:
Family: (view spoiler)
His Mouth Will Taste of Wormwood: (view spoiler)
The End of the Garden: (view spoiler)
The Dark: (view spoiler)
Angels In Love: (view spoiler)
Added Devolution!About the National Parks thing, I'll have to ask my husband for the link of the stories he's always telling me. Some of these people disappear from campsites just off the road and then there've been like a pile of teeth by a tree that they find later or something. SUPER disturbing. A little conspiracy-theory-esque but freaky nonetheless. We live 30 minutes from our mountains/National forest, and I've been on a few hikes like that Alison! I'm not outdoorsy but after hearing that I'm even less outdoorsy haha.
Thanks for the recommendation Alison, added it to my TBR :)Today I read:
The Function of Dream Sleep: (view spoiler)
Worlds that flourish: (view spoiler)
Do we want this thread moved to the December folder when we post next month's buddy reads? I read..
The Ocean and all its Devices: (view spoiler)
The Delicate: (view spoiler)
The Man in the Black Suit: (view spoiler)
We can leave the thread in the November folder as far as I’m concerned, we can still post in it there right? I’m guessing both of you will be done beginning of December and it shouldn’t take me too long into December either to finish up.I only read one today because this one took me longer than expected.
The Boy in the Tree: (view spoiler)
Next few:Family: (view spoiler)
His Mouth Will Taste of Wormwood: (view spoiler)
The End of the Garden: (view spoiler)
I think I will be done with this by the end of November...but if we still need time, it doesn't hurt to add it to the December folder of Buddy Reads! :)My thoughts on:
The Ice Man: (view spoiler)
Replacements: (view spoiler)
The Diane Arbus Suicide Portfolio: (view spoiler)
The Country Doctor (view spoiler)
Last Rites and Resurrections: (view spoiler)
The Ocean and All Its Devices: (view spoiler)
Okay we can leave it in November and as long as we finish before December 25th we'll be good! The Snow Pavilion: I'm not even putting a spoiler here because it took me the entire day to get through this yesterday just because my kids kept interrupting me and I couldn't string 2 thoughts together, so while I read it, I could tell you almost nothing about it, nor form an opinion.
The Meat Garden: (view spoiler)
The Stiff and the Stile: (view spoiler)
Yellow and Red: (view spoiler)
I read yesterday and didn't have a chance to post and now the stories have fallen out of my brain! I've been having a hard time focusing because of work/Christmas stress. So I likely won't have too much to say.The God of Dark Laughter: (view spoiler)
Details: (view spoiler)
The Genius of Assassins: (view spoiler)
I know what you mean SarahKat! I always have to run here and post straight after reading before I forget my thoughts. We’ve read sooo many stories by now...Today I read:
The Country Doctor: (view spoiler)
Last Rites and Resurrections: (view spoiler)
Catching up on my thoughts on stories today...I had to really think about where I left off! It has been a couple days since I updated! That was a mistake because I, too, forgot all my thoughts on the stories and had to revisit them :DMy thoughts on:
The Snow Pavilion: (view spoiler)
The Meat Garden: (view spoiler)
The Stiff and the Stile: (view spoiler)
Yellow and Red: (view spoiler)
The Specialist's Hat: (view spoiler)
Alison on Yellow and Red: (view spoiler)Okay ladies. It took me almost 1000 pages to think of this, but I totally cheated and listened to my second story today on YouTube! I've been having so much trouble focusing on reading recently, especially this book since it's a physical copy and I can't read it at odd times at work or while I'm rocking the baby. But I CAN listen to audio stuff when I'm doing other things! I might be cheating on a lot of the remaining stories now...
The Beautiful Gelreesh: (view spoiler)
The Town Manager: (view spoiler)
SarahKat, audio instead of physical/ebook is not cheating at all! I think it’s a great idea, I had no idea that you could find these on YouTube. I might try searching for one or two to read that way while doing laundry or dishes tomorrow :)Today I read:
The Ocean and All Its Devices: (view spoiler)
The Delicate: (view spoiler)
Marleen: Yes...we start The Gunslinger in January!! :) I actually avoided Stephen King for a long time because a couple of his short stories creeped me out when I was younger but I just finished 11/22/63 and that wasn't very creepy! I am also reading Mr. Mercedes for one of the prompts in the Just the Facts Ma'am challenge (Death by Wheels...vehicle used :) on my husband's recommendation...a King mystery novel, who would've thought?! I guess he wrote a few, albeit with his own twist ;)My thoughts on:
A Redress for Andromeda: (view spoiler)
The God of Dark Laughter: (view spoiler)
Details: (view spoiler)
The Genius of Assassins: (view spoiler)

Sandkings: (view spoiler)[Woo George R.R. Martin did not disappoint! I haven't read anything by him except A Song of Ice and Fire, which I love and have actually re-read (I don't usually re-read things). I guess I need to start branching out with some of his other works because I really enjoyed this.
It was so disturbing from the start. The description of the Sandkings was really interesting. I definitely wouldn't want them in my house, even though I'd be nice. Kress was obviously NOT the type of person who should be allowed to keep pets of any kind, let alone sentient beings who are smart enough to know when they're being f**** with. I knew those orange ones were going to be important. I wonder if Jana Wo knew they were out there and purposefully sent Kress to his death?
Alison, so lucky! I live up here far away from anything cool. I have seen stuff about Meow Wolf and have been waiting for them to open the one that's coming to Denver (6 hours away). But of course, that's been put on hold because of this obnoxious pandemic. (hide spoiler)]
Window: (view spoiler)[This one was really good too. I was NOT expecting the nice little family to turn into man-eating creatures. I really wanted more information. It did seem to me that the girl was aware of the window and was looking "at" them. They said she just sat there staring every morning, and when Reeves arrives she's not surprised at all. I don't think they changed because he arrived. I think they were attempting to trick, either the viewers or possibly other people in their time/place into thinking they were normal humans, so their half-transformed visage was like their morning routine or something. After all, there must be normal humans where they live, otherwise they would not have been so quick to view Reeves as a meal. The bones at the end and the fact that the window is just apparently open now was creeeeepy.
Alison, 11/22/63 is great! I listened to it on audio book and it's probably my favorite audio ever. Stephen King is hit or miss for me so I was pleasantly surprised. (hide spoiler)]
The Brood: (view spoiler)[I love how this poor, naïve veterinarian thinks this woman is taking stray animals off the street to take them home and love them or hoard them and the only reason he goes into the house in the first place is he's concerned about the animals. Awww. But yeah, otherwise pretty dark. A brood of faces? Ugh. (hide spoiler)]
