An unhappy girl who engages in self-harm, a woman ostracized by society, and an old woman looking to live out her twilight years in peace―what could three such different people have in common? That's what grade schooler Koyanagi Nanoka is trying to find out.
My review:
A short tale about change, courage, and humbleness. This book is a smack in the face of wisdom for both kids and adults alike. Even without the aspect of psychology underlying everything, the setting and its characters will have you enchanted.
Although the main character is a smart kid, this author gets it right by having her be and act like a kid, nonetheless. Watching her grow, though a glimpse of frustration might take you, is one of the best things about this book.
Dialogues. Characterization. These are also the good points of this book. The characters she touches with her warmth, and the characters whose warmth touches her, are all well developed beings.
Finally, the prose, although not 10/10, is better than most and does its job well.
Read this book, especially if you want a glimpse into modern Japanese literature.
It’s one of my favorite light novels, and with only one volume to booth.
