Robert Limb | 4 comments A children's book, a bit like the Water Babies or Wind in the Willows. An adventure in a river, written by a little known author who had some unusual political or philosphical ideas. A contemporary of Kenneth Grahame or A.A. Milne? All I can remember for sure is this "PC Gudgeon with his trudgeon waiting for a fish to bludgeon

Thank you for any help

Kimber (kimberlibri) | 158 comments It almost sounds like something written by Frank L. Baum. I don't know why but that's the first thing that kicked into my mind.

Sue Elleker | 1055 comments The Stream That Stood Still by Beverly Nichols. It's the second of the Magic Mountain series. The others are The Tree That Sat Down and The Mountain Of Magic.

Robert Limb | 4 comments I think it must be "The Stream that stood still", although strangely enough, I did not recognise the title. My thanks to Tim - you sound 100% sur of yourself, so it must be that.

Oh, Sorry Sue! I cannot read in straight lines, apparently. I really appreciate your help.

You're welcome. I think the last line was 'taking fishes to my dudgeon'-and the child pointed out it was dungeon; which the fish said didn't rhyme!

Robert Limb | 4 comments Well, I'm going back well over 50 years to when my mother read this book to us! I'm now collecting classics for my grandchildren. However, I do remember not really understanding "bludgeon". I thought it meant that a fish had done something wrong, not that the PC wanted to whack them. HOWEVER, I have ordered a copy, so we shall see.

Anway, thanks again, I am truly grateful.

The Stream That Stood Still for Sue's suggestion. Robert, let us know as soon as you find out if that's the right book.
