Helena | 50 comments Hi there!

I love classics, and now that the summer is over, I'm looking for some that would work well in an audiobook format. By that, I just mean that they're not too dense and wordy, so that I don't have to reach for a dictionary or keep rewinding to understand what's going on. I'd also like suggestions for classics that would be pleasant to listen to, as in they'd take me on an adventure. (Please no romance though, I don't like listening to romance.)

Some examples I loved listening to:
One Hundred Years of Solitude
The Three Musketeers
David Copperfield
Crime and Punishment - some people wouldn't consider this pleasant to listen to, but I think that a book that largely consists of the narrator's thoughts works amazingly well in an audiobook format.
Catch-22
Basically anything by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Thanks so much in advance!

The Mystery Of Charles Dickens by Peter Ackroyd - performed by actor Simon Callow - is an unusual biography of Dickens. Callow brings to life many of Dickens' characters, as he weaves brief excerpts from the novels with biographical text.

Wow, all of your suggestions were required readings for my freshman year of HS :)
That's quite a coincidence! I really loved The Scarlet Letter, and I liked Orwell too. Thanks

Some more classics....

The Awakening
Of Mice and Men
The Metamorphosis
Anne of Green Gables
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
The Picture of Dorian Gray
