Might want to check authors Betty Ren Wright and Mary Downing Hahn. They wrote a ton of kid ghost books from that era.

Eventually protagonist follows a child female ghost, I -believe- into the woods outside the house, and sees the ghost relive her death, I -believe- by some bad guys of some description (unless I'm confused and she falls into a well or something, but that might be another book) but that's the gist. During the whole book, the ghost leaves behind a trinket (memory says flower/rose OR music box maybe) of sorts in various places throughout the house over a period of several days to weeks to maybe the whole school year, so that she can get the protagonist to follow/trust her so the truth can be known and her spirit can rest.
I would very much like to find this book for my son, who is now 9 and in the 4th grade and beginning to read more mature, lengthier chapter books.
Thank you very much!
