Joan Barnett | 1972 comments A good book to read for the first prompt would be Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? Big Questions from Tiny Mortals About Death. It was a funny morbid book that I highly recommend. If you're squeamish I would not read it however.

Serendipity | 441 comments It’s funny how everyone’s perception differs, possibly depending on their preferred prompt type. I was in the camp that thought we had plenty of title cover prompts but I see we still have just 2 covers, but now 4 titles. Someone else thinks we have plenty of list/award prompts but we only have 2 lists and no awards yet. I also wonder if the types of prompts we are seeing suggested even if they don’t make it through is altering how we perceive things. I also don’t see the Tony prompt as an award prompt since the award isn’t related to book or author. But I can also see how others would see it as an award prompt.

I dont think people are shying away because of it being an 'awards' prompt so much as if you dont follow the Tonys figuring out which musicals even qualify to try to base the prompt off of is an extra layer of research that we may not want to do

That's definitely true for some people, but I've seen others say "I don't want to vote for another award prompt." I remember this because the first time I had to check the list because I didn't think we had an award prompt, and then realized they meant the Tony awards.

I figured that would be one of those personal ones- cause my plan is to literally take the first word I get and go to my to read list and searching for the word.

(We do have the Goodreads Choice Awards prompt, which is one awards prompt, albeit a not-so-prestigious award lol)

Serendipity | 441 comments How did I miss that? Must have only looked under the lists and awards subheading and its under its under a different subheading.

Conny | 648 comments Avery wrote: "I was going to downvote adaptation because I also dislike classics and reading those, but I decided I could work in any book in a series into that prompt. I guess technically it could be any book written by the same author you’ve read. Peter Swanson wrote three stand alone novels that all feature the same detective. "

Oh snap, did I get the wording that wrong? I did not mean the prompt to point specifically to classics at all!
To be clear, by "A book you picked up because of an adaptation of it or a related work" I meant something like you've seen the movie/TV show/play, now you want to read the book. You read "The Wild Sargasso Sea", now you're curious about "Jane Eyre". You accidentally picked up book 5 in a series, now you want to start at the beginning. You've heard "Clueless" is based on "Emma" or "Bridget Jones" is (sort-of) based on "Pride and Prejudice", or "Cruel Intentions" on "Les liaisons dangereuses", now you want to read the source material (OK, so those are indeed classics, but that is by no means the only option). Was that not clear?

Just wondering ... how did you interpret that prompt?

message 110: by Kat (new)

Kat | 567 comments I read it as a book that has been turned into a film or TV show but that doesn't limit it to classics. I do like to watch adaptations of classics to understand them better but I tend to read the book first.

In the last couple of weeks I've watched Umbrella Academy which is based on a comic book series, Lethal White which is the fourth Cormoran Strike book (I actually started reading the series because of this) and I keep hearing an advert for I'll be gone in the dark which is a documentary based on the book and the search for the Golden State killer. Everyone was talking about Normal People earlier this year because of the TV show.

message 111: by Juliet (new)

Juliet Brown | 264 comments I also read the ‘adaptation’ part to mean made into a film or series and read both You and (finally) Haunting of Hill House this year because of the Netflix series

You did! I found your response in the results so you're good.

the wording was clear, it's just that we all think of these things differently. My first thought was of all the Netflix shows that are being made from books these days:
Stumptown, Vol. 1: The Case of the Girl Who Took Her Shampoo
The Old Guard, Book One: Opening Fire
To All the Boys I've Loved Before
I Am Not Okay With This

and then of course my brain jumped to ALL the movies based on books that I have not yet read, most notably:
Psycho
Brokeback Mountain
The Devil in the Flesh
L.A. Confidential
No Country for Old Men
Solaris
The Bourne Identity
To Live
The Third Man

message 114: by Beth (new)

Beth | 450 comments I also interpreted it as a TV/movie adaptation - if it was just for classics I probably wouldn't have voted for it. There are lots of upcoming adaptations that I'm looking forward to but want to read the book first such as:
Death on the Nile
Where the Crawdads Sing
China Rich Girlfriend
The Woman in the Window
I Know This Much Is True

For non-classic adaptations you also have Outlander, the Miss Fisher mysteries by Kerry Greenwood, Call the Midwife, American Gods, Good Omens, etc.

Avery (averyapproved) | 475 comments No the wording is fine! My first thought went to retellings of classics or fairytales. I don’t like those types of books, but retellings would definitely fit if people like that! I didn’t think about tv/movie adaptations, but it’s because I will almost never read a book after I’ve seen the show/film. So the only way I saw it to fit for me was the next book in a series.

Because of the wording of the prompt “picked up because of an adaptation” my thinking was you see an advertisement for a TV show or movie and they say “based on the bestselling novel” and you think, “O that’s a book? I think I’ll read it” instead of or before watching the show or movie.

Ah, all right :D I was a bit worried there because I thought I'd accidentally nasrrowed it down even though I meant to broaden it (not just say "saw the movie/tv show" but include other forms of adaptation as well).

That is a more specific way of looking at it but very valid :)

message 122: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 101 comments I think an adaption can have various forms. Besides the obvious movie, series, stage performance, it could also be a painting/picture, a retelling, an audio play, an art installation, a song, a game inspired by a book.

If it makes it on the list, I'm going to read No More Peace. My nieces youth group performed it last year and I was stunned how relevant it is especially today, while being written before WWI, and how I never heard of it or the author!
But there would also be plenty of movies or series I was thinking of reading the books after watching.

message 123: by Conny (new)

Conny | 648 comments My words, Nicole. I specifically meant to include plays, audio dramas, graphic novels, etc.
