I agree that some have time to do the buddy reads since these are reads someone genuinely wants to read or already purchased the book.Years ago, I joined as an author and reader in hopes one of my books would be read. Then read the rules, and have to participate on another thread to do that. Only once since I been here that we discussed and read an author's book from the group.
Look for a few polls that encapsulate most of these ideas in a few days. One of the things I've been mulling and will probably put on a poll is, "What is the right amount of "themed" polls?". The desire for them is heard but I now have a backlog of about 30 poll-ready popular current books. We now have one fixed theme, the February black classics poll. With each theme month, women, Latin, Asian, African, sci-fi/ fantasy, etc. that backlog is apt to get much larger and some deserving newer popular book won't make it to the poll.
I also think that opening the choice to nominations by members is a very good idea... it can allow for suggestions of older books that are more easily available, and it creates an even more diverse possibility for suggestions since readers in this group probably have a wide appreciation of different authors, topics, and locations.

I like this idea as well. There is SO much coming out and that has been out that I am not aware of. The one thing there isn't an abundance of, are diverse and concise book lists. This could be a part of group branding where you offer another resource to your members. I'm down for that.

" The so-called 'Must Read Classics by authors of color' doesn't always include a wide variety of subject such as LGBT issues and people living with Disabilities. Plus there are indeed older books of great merit that didn't always receive the recognition that they deserved when they were first published such as Melvin Dixon's VANISHING ROOMS.

Thanks for this. I’m glad the author picked The Secret Lives of Church Ladies for his fiction selection. However, it’s the only one of the five I’ve read. I just requested Shuggie Bain by Diuglas Stuart from the library. Have you read any of these?

I may have chosen one of those titles but once I read the June title, for me, I was greatly disappointed. I cannot recall if I chosen the second title but it was way better to my reading tastes. I think I participated in both.
