The book is about a girl possibly in middle school whose father tries to k*ll himself by putting a g*n to his head. He survives but ends up blind. The girl doesn't exactly understand what happened and wants her father to go to the science fair. The setting is in some rural town. The cover might have had a cloud on it. I read this book around 2014-2016.

The main character is a boy, not a girl, but otherwise The Cloud Chamber by Joyce Maynard seems to fit.
