Correct. So you need one more book to earn that guess!

Aimee (pebbles320) Ellie wrote: "I think we only earn half a guess per book finished now?"

Oh you're right sorry! It's Friday, my head is all over the place.

I've just finished Thread on Arrival, so I'll enter that up and it should be the other half of Aimee's guess.

message 254: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments I'll submit T

message 255: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments So, that's most definitely Nineteen Minutes. We have to make one more letter guess before we can submit the title. We can choose any letter including vowels. What say yee?

message 256: by Aimee (new)

Aimee (pebbles320) I've just finished the last five hours of my audiobook (Fire) so that's another 0.5 guess for the hours and 0.5 for a completed book. Shall we go for an E to triple-check Nineteen Minutes as our guess?

message 257: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Yes, and then we can guess the title! I'll submit it.

message 258: by Trish, Annular Mod (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 1238 comments Mod
Can we guess E, or will we have to guess S?

For the record, I probably won't be able to read much tomorrow, as I'm out for most of it.

message 259: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments I postef E. Since all available letters ran out in the title we're now allowed all. Should I maybe just put our title guess right away, so Emily can unlock the next puzzle? I mean, aren't we pretty certain?

message 260: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments The E's are in their place and if it isn't 'Nineteen Minutes' I'll be surprised.
Posting it now.
Good night!

PUZZLE 8: ON THE MENU
Titles will contain a word relating to food or drink.

message 262: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Hello all! We seem to have earned another guess, and we have a new puzzle.
We're back to no vowels, R, S or T

So I'll take the initiative to post N and hope it will be as useful as last time :)

message 263: by Aimee (new)

Aimee (pebbles320) We've got two three letter words which could be 'the' - if N doesn't pan out, maybe we could try H next?

message 264: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Yes, that's a good idea. We can see what happens with N and then H next, depending on what we get.

message 265: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Alright, we have a couple of N's there, and another guess. I'll submit H

message 266: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments So I didn't get much chance to read yesterday but I finished Afterland today. I'll go have a look at our latest puzzle.

message 267: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Great Ellie. The first word is probably 'the' and the third word in, on, an. And it's food related

message 268: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Ha! I just scrolled through a goodreads list of titles with food and 'The face on the milk carton' (that I have never heard of) is a fit. Should we try to establish/ disprove that in our next guess?

message 269: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments Johanne wrote: "Ha! I just scrolled through a goodreads list of titles with food and 'The face on the milk carton' (that I have never heard of) is a fit. Should we try to establish/ disprove that in our next guess?"

I did the same thing! M or L might be good picks as fairly common if it's not that title.

message 270: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments That's what I was thinking as well. C is not as common.

message 271: by Trish, Annular Mod (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 1238 comments Mod
Sorry I haven't added to the cause today - but I'm glad we've got Puzzle 7 out of the way.

I've never head of the milk carton one, either, but if you want to do M and L, I have no problems with that. Maybe followed by K?

message 272: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments In two letter guesses we can make a title guess, so I think we should do that then if possible. I think M is a good idea as the next letter, but if that's in the proper place, should we do a C to be sure before guessing, or would you still do L?

message 273: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments We could go with C. I'm reading a short book now so hopefully will finish it quickly.

message 274: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments I think that's a plan. M first and if it's where we think it will be then C. If M is not we'll obviously revise the strategy.

message 275: by Trish, Annular Mod (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 1238 comments Mod
ok

message 276: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments I finished my book, so we have another guess (M) I'll put in before sleep.
Good night!

Have y'all really not heard of that book?! It was a staple in my childhood library... classic mystery! I'm shocked y'all haven't heard of it!

message 278: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments We didn't really get exposed to many American children's books in Scotland.

Remember, this is the European Finch family! :-)

Ellie wrote: "We didn't really get exposed to many American children's books in Scotland."

Exactly. I know that when I was growing up (60s/70s - yes, I'm that old!) about the only US kids mysteries I saw were Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys and not many of them. That space was filled by Enid Blyton over here. Its only now, in the days of Amazon and Ereaders that more US kids books are becoming available.

Plus, faces on milk cartons is a US thing. We don't do it in the UK, at least, and I'm not sure they do in Europe, either.

I am, of course, going to have to read it now!

message 280: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments I don't think it's translated to Danish, and when I started reading English-language books in my teens I was mainly looking for fantasy and sci-fi. Enid Blyton was big here as well. I grew up in the 80's.
We don't have faces on milk cartons either :)

message 281: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments I'm posting C, and then we have a title guess.

message 282: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments We didn't even have milk cartons to put faces on! We got our milk in glass bottles, I always though it was weird on TV when Americans would pour milk out of a juice carton. 😄

message 283: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments I lived in the US for a short period (in the 2000s) and I don't remember seeing any milk cartons with missing people on. I don't remember seeing milk cartons at all. It just came in the plastic bottles. I must've been buying the wrong milk!

message 284: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments We have milk cartons :)
When I lived in Zimbabwe for a couple of years, it came in plastic bags and glass bottles.

message 285: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments ... and that was Zimbabwe in the late 80's

Aimee (pebbles320) Ellie wrote: "We didn't even have milk cartons to put faces on! We got our milk in glass bottles, I always though it was weird on TV when Americans would pour milk out of a juice carton. 😄"

Yes! I always thought they were putting some strange juice on their cereal. I'm from the UK (half Scottish, half English) but grew up in France, and in both countries we either had milk in plastic bottles or glass ones.

message 287: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments We have our C's in place so I'm going to make the title guess. You think we can solve one last puzzle?

message 288: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11215 comments Mod
To be fair, I was born in the 80s and have never seen a milk carton with a missing child on it lol. But I'm glad I gave that puzzle to this group since the American groups probably would have gotten it more quickly.

PUZZLE 9: PERSON
Book titles in this category contain someone's first and/or last name.

message 290: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments @Emily, and it started an interesting discussion ;)

message 291: by Ellie (new)

Sorry. I'm only adding 95 pages today

message 293: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments I'm adding another book later, I'm 100 pages from finishing 'The Colour of Magic'. Will you believe I have never read Discworld before?

How did you like it? I love Discworld but not a fan of Rincewind. I always suggest people start with a later book.

Having also reread it this readathon, I enjoyed it more this time around - I think I understood more of the references.

Not that I think we're going to get there, but I'm guessing Anna Karenina for puzzle 9. Easily proven or not if we get a guess and use N

Ooh that's a good guess. We might not make it in time but at least if it turns out to be correct you'll have the satisfaction of being right!

Same Ellie - I think Guards! Guards! is a better test of whether someone will get on with Discworld or not. If they don't like it, they won't like the others.
The Watch sub-series is by far my favourite, with the Moist von Lipwig and Witches books vying for second place.

message 298: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments Good guess Trish, if we do get another one before the end we should guess N, however I am nearly done for the day.

message 299: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Good guess Trish!
I finished Colour of Magic and put today's pages, which gives us two letter guesses. Should we guess N and K, and quickly determine if Trish is right?

I enjoyed the Colour of Magic, a lot of fun and cool concepts, but it did seemed a bit fragmented, as if the concepts were thrown in haphazardly, which is also part of the fun, but it sort of took over the ability to immerse in the story. I was 'warned' beforehand that it might not be the best of the books, but I took over the first five books from my dad and stepmum's private library when they moved to a smaller house. So it felt right to start with those.
All in all i really liked it and I'm looking forward to reading on and watch all the stories unfold :)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments I just went ahead and posted N and K since we are a wee bit short on time.
