A challenge inspired by the boardgames Trivial Pursuit / Cranium where you must answer questions / participate in activity as dictated by categories correctly to collect your pieces of coloured pie slices to make a full pie. However, instead of only 6 pie slices, we will be doubling it to 12 slices.
There will be 4 Rounds with Round 1 to start 1 February 2015 and subsequent Rounds will be announced / started as soon as someone finished / completed the current Round (ie. have finished reading the last book to collect a full pie –all 12 colours).
How to play:
1. There are 12 pie slices (“Colours”) to be collected to complete your pie (“Round”).
2. For Round 1: under each Colour, there will be a list of 6 Shelves.
List of Shelves
3. Roll 2 dice to determine the Colour and roll once more, of 1 die, to determine the Shelf you are to read from (1=a, 2=b... 6=f)
Example:
Rolled 5 ---> Chicken and Mushroom Pie – Black: Non Fiction (1)
Rolled 3 ---> c. art
4. The Shelf must be found on page 1 of the book’s listing of Top Shelves.
On the right hand side of the book page, just underneath the advertisement, you'll see a header: "Genre". There is a list of Top Shelves there then a link, "See Top Shelves...". Click this link and you will see page 1 of the book's list of Top Shelves.
5. You may claim a Colour when you finished reading the book, as per your die rolls.
6. If you've rolled same number for a Colour you've already got, you still have to read for it again prior to moving on.
Just as in the boardgame you still have to do the activity / answer the question correctly to move forward
7. BUT you can ONLY claim a Colour ONCE.
Your complete pie of 12 slices will have to be made up of all 12 different Colours.
8. As we are using 2 dice, we cannot roll a "1" so "1" will be the LAST Colour to be read / claimed AFTER you have read / claimed Colours #2-12.
You will still need to roll 1 die to determine which Shelf to read from for Colour #1
9. There will be limited planning allowed: you may roll / plan up to 3 books ONLY (1 currently being read and 2 upcoming)
This is to assist those who needs to plan around library visits etc
10. NO page limitation for Round 1
11. And just for fun... you can share your favourite pie recipes here
EDITED:
Reads does not have to be in order but the relevant books will need to be read after you have rolled your dice.

ah, ha ha ha, it's not original thought but he he he, it's easier to 'create' a reading challenge based on other stuff lol.
Lemme know how you go... would love to see how you guys go about it :)

( On a related note, which I had realised this was posted BEFORE I had that large glass of red! It's been a helluva week ! )
Judging by the lack of questions, I'm guessing that everyone's got the rules down easy ;)

The book has to be found on the shelf that the link goes AND the book must have the shelf on the first page of top shelves. Is this correct?
ETA: What if the book is on the Shelf but it doesn't fit the parent category? For example The Help is on the history shelf and "history" is on the first page of top shelves but it isn't Non-Fiction.

I was checking some difficult shelves like 'humanities' and found out that the first book that's listed in that shelf- Hamlet - doesn't have humanities in its first page of Top Shelves.
What can we read for that shelf then?

Regarding shelf "young adult paranormal"
I found a book on the shelf Reunion which is supposed to be shelved 34 times as "young-adult-paranormal"; but, when i went to the Top Shelves for the book, I found 34 users shelved it as "ya-paranormal". Would this count?

Boo! Now, there are questions :(
@Lauren:
If the book has the shelf on the first page of top shelves, then the book will be found the shelf the link goes... somewhere...
I'm not going to fuss about not fitting 'parent' category. It's really up to you but... if you want to be challenged (ie. if you've obviously rarely read any non-fiction) then I'd encouraged you to go within the spirit of it (ie. find a history non-fiction book to read).
@D.G. & Dee:
yes, I've noticed that for some popular book, whilst it may have the highest number of being shelved as 'humanities' (therefore, on the first page of that shelf), it may not show on the first page of top shelves because it's not the highest number of times the book's been listed for that shelf. This is going to force us to "discover" some books, though I hope this isn't going to prove to be an issue...

Now this is a pickle... *sighs*
It seems that whilst, it was supposed to be shelved 34 times as 'young-adult-paranormal' -there are only 7 users who really shelved it as 'young-adult-paranormal'. (I've checked some random other books for diffrent shelves, and I haven't seem to encounter the same issue...)
And then, when you click on 'ya-paranormal' shelf from the top shelves page, it takes you to "Young Adult Paranormal". Scroll down, and you find "Popular Young Adult Paranormal Books"... so basically 'ya-paranormal' finds you back on 'young-adult-paranormal'(!!!!)
This is so weird, that I'd say we'll accept 'ya-paranormal' as well as 'young-adult-paranormal' as it appears to be taking you back to the same shelf!
IF anyone else finds any other anomaly like this, please let me know.

Dee wrote: "Tien - i'm guessing that has to do with the merging of shelves - kind of like childrens/children/kids etc"
yes, most probably! They've merged the shelves under the genre so you find yourself back at the same spot :p
There will probably other shelves which will have the same issue then. Though mostly the popular ones rather than the more obscure one like humanities ha ha ha. I'm rather hoping there won't be too many!
Edited:
And... I found a few...
IF quite a number of you finding #4 difficult (ie. encountering issue like this one, like Bea), please let me know, early-ish and I may reconsider this rule. Thanks!
Sorry, I didn't even think about this merging shelves affecting the challenge! I was trying to make this more challenging!

Thanks Tien. I do want to make it more challenging and read books that I might otherwise not discover, so I'll be incorporating the parent category into my choices as well :0)

Thanks, Tien. Leave it to GR to make a group work harder for its challenges.

I think I may end up sitting this one out. My first three rolls were:
roll 5, 4: Chicken and Mushroom Pie – Black: Non Fiction (1), humanities
roll 4, 4: Fish Pie – Pink: Paranormal, witches
roll 5, 5: Chicken and Mushroom Pie – Black: Non Fiction (1),food and drink
So far, I've checked a number of pages of each of the 3 shelves without finding anything I want to read that actually had the shelf on its first page of top shelves. Humanities is a special problem because so much of what's listed there isn't non-fiction. But neither witches nor food-and-drink is my cup of tea. And rolling a "5" twice in my first 3 rolls is a bummer.
But I still have so much to finish for last year's challenge that I can just keep on with that instead.

Let me see if I understand Rule 4 correctly. For my first role I got black - nonfiction, and d - humanities. The second book on the list is Pride and Prejudice. Even though it is the second book on the list, it was only shelved 20 times as "humnanities" which puts that shelf on page 6 of the books top shelves. So even though it is the second book on the list, since humanities is not on the first page of its top shelves, I cannot use it. Correct?
Technically that means that I have to find a book that is shelved at least 100 times as humanities...So the more popular the book, the less likely that humanities is to be on the first page of top shelves, right?

I think I may be outnumbered by the females in this group!!
I'll admit that I may struggle with the Romance pie!
Looking forward to this challenge.

aww we'll miss you, Susan, though I understand what you mean about last year's leftover... I still haven't finish ScaterShelves and so far, this year has proven to be slow reading! Do join us for Round 2 though... won't be as tough, I think.
You still can share your fave pie recipe too :)

Sorry you aren't playing this one, Susan. You will be missed.
FYI - I ended up with the same first role as you did black and humanities. I did finally find a book that I thought would be good....Ghost Girl by Torey L. Hayden. A number of my friends gave it either 4 or 5 stars so I am going to give it a try.

Also, as I read it, Lyn, Pride and Prejudice wouldn't count anyway, since it's not non-fiction. That was the problem I had with that shelf.

Thanks, Lyn. I'll keep that book in mind in case I change my mind and decide to try. I'm often unable to resist Tien's games in spite of trying to tell myself I'll stay out. But since I didn't like any of my first three rolls at all, I may take Tien's suggestion and join in the next round.
And I'll definitely post a pie recipe when I can. My grandparents were from West Virginia, and vinegar pie is a family favorite. Most people can't imagine they'd like it when they hear the name. It's like lemon pie, only better.

OK, now I am confused. I thought that the book I read only has to be on the shelf I end up with, i.e. ANYTHING on the humanities shelf that fits the "first page" criteria is okay.
Or does it actually have to be a book where humanities shows up on the first page of its top shelves AND non fiction since that is the broad category?
I think I am not the only one picking fiction books from the shelves under Non-fiction.

Susan, check my comment on #21. Yoi dont have to fit in NF, if you really dont want to. Only if you want the extra challenge.
What Is Vinegar Pie?!?!
What Is Vinegar Pie?!?!

I really don't get how things are shelved. Perhaps because, I think it was shelved under " History" and not "Historical" it somehow ended up as non-fiction ?

I'm trying very hard not to join! My challenge this year is to read what I want so I'm not joining challenges that restrict me very much. But I'm still very tempted!

Thanks for the clarification. I totally missed seeing that message.
