Neither did I, Lahni. Its a good thing I wasn't enjoying the book I'd started, lol!

I know! Some of my books are ready to be picked up from the library already, but I haven't got them yet as I know then I'll be tempted to start reading early!

It seems that several have already started. There is even a post in the CLAIM YOUR SLICE thread. I vote that we move up the start date, since some are champing at the bit! (That's a comment on how fun your creative games are, Tien!)

message 54: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1223 comments I second that motion!

message 55: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments patience is a virtue (even if I don't possess it) - starting a challenge mid-month is hard; especially when people have planned on a Feb 1 start (need to wait on library books etc) - it puts others at an unfair advantage - only 9 more days

message 56: by Bea (new)

Bea | 5296 comments Mod
Dee, I understand. Myself - won't be ready for several days anyway. Too much to read. Just noted that everyday (it seems) we have people reporting having completed or reading a book already. I will wait.

message 57: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments i'd love to start, but its not fair on others who have to wait which means that no one starts with a level playing field and this game as it is, will already suit faster/shorter readers (at least in this round)

message 58: by LynnB (new)

LynnB | 1769 comments Maybe Tien could "lock" down the Claim Your Slice thread until Feb 1? It's really not fair on those who signed up but might not check these threads again until the 1st to start earlier.

message 59: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1223 comments You're right, Dee :0)

It'll be hard but I'll be patient.

message 60: by Lahni (new)

Lahni | 660 comments I'm happy to wait. I'm just reading things that don't fit into the challenge. It's actually kind of nice to read what I want and not have to worry about fitting them in!

I wish more challenges favored slow readers. I'm competitive but can never really compete unless I read 24/7 and thats just not realistic. Someday I want a challenge that favors us slow readers and makes it harder for you fast readers!! Haha!!

LynnB | 1769 comments Lahni wrote: "Someday I want a challenge that favors us slow readers and makes it harder for you fast readers!! Haha!! "

We did (sort of)! LOL! Snakes and Ladders! I don't know that it favored slower readers, but I know I hit lots of snakes, no ladders. Took forever for me, reading speed seemed to be of no help.
:)

message 65: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 380 comments My problem is I just ordered a few books from the library, and have pick ups every day this week, and only one of those relates to the challenge ( I do have another one at home ), but my plan was, once I finished one book to roll another, in case my library book doesn't turn up in time ( this seems within the rules, as I will still only have 3 active shelves, 1 currently reading, 2 planned ).

But, right now, happy to focus on my library books. Two are due back Tuesday, and with the public holiday this weekend ( Australia Day for those playing from overseas ), I am hoping to finish either The Lost Hero or Insurgent, or both. Only ticks off one Moving Mountains read, but I have been waiting to get hold of both for about a month!

Thank you all for your input. My apologies for being late to the party! It's been a busy few days -getting my eldest ready for school (ack! Where did the last 5 years go?!). I'm pretty sure I'll be crying a river on his first day -I could feel my tearducts gearing up right now just thinking about it!

I should've thought about locking that thread down, thanks LynnB -I've done that now... I posted that thread, in case I forgot later ;p

I know most reading challenges are geared for fast readers BUT... I've tried to make some adjustment to hopefully slow some people down (ie. random die rolls & having to read the colour you've claimed if you rolled it again) hopefully... Also, I've avoided terms like 'winning' etc and rather used 'completed'. Whoever "complete" their pies are winners! :D

Only a week to go!! Enjoy this week, read whatever you want, finish whatever other challenges are due (like me ha ha ha) and before you know it, 1 Feb will be here.

I remember the Snakes and Ladders game but thats about the time I got pregnant with the twins and my attention span for reading flew out the window so I didn't participate. But I love tying in my reading with challenges even if I never complete one and think this group does some really fun ones!

Really happy that there are people who enjoyed the challenges. :)

Dee wrote: "just to confirm - we can only read 1 book at a time correct?"

ah, well, if you're a multi-reader, you can read all 3 books concurrently BUT the main point was only 3 books at a time on your 'plan'. So, if you're reading all 3 books, you can only roll your next read when you've finished 1.

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments Cool! I was thinking more listening to 1, reading another type deal but wanted to check

Coralie | 1658 comments For the shelf 'social issues' I am planning on reading In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto which currently has the shelf on the first page but it's the second last shelf and is not guaranteed to still be on that page when I claim my piece of pie. Can I use it if the shelf has slipped?

That's fine, Coralie. Just remind me of this when you claim your slice, if it has moved to second page.

Anyone else who has same concern, please just let me know when you decided on the book to read (before you read / claim your slice of pie) so I just do my checking now than later :)

Thanks!

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1223 comments Question - I've rolled twice for Mystery, but haven't finished the book for the first roll. Does it matter if I finish the book for the 2nd roll before the first and claim the pie slice with that one instead?

Lahni wrote: "So I just rolled space opera and it's made me wonder, what is a space opera?"

is that sarcasm, Lahni...? :)

In case, it's not... it usually refers to sci-fi books which are set in outer space / alien planets (as opposed to: on earth)

message 85: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments wiki is your friend - Space opera is a subgenre of science fiction that often emphasizes romantic, often melodramatic adventure, set mainly or entirely in outer space, usually involving conflict between opponents possessing advanced abilities, weapons, and other technology. The term has no relation to music but is instead a play on the term "soap opera".

Haha! Not sarcastic. Science fiction is not my most loved genre and I'm not very familiar with all the sub genres.

message 87: by Leo(nie) (new)

Leo(nie) (lemongreen_bird) So, I just rolled fantasy-romance. I guess I can't just read a book which is shelved as fantasy AND romance, but only books which are shelved as fantasy-romance, correct?

message 88: by Mell (new)

Mell (mellrouvray) | 149 comments I have 3 planned books at the moment and am currently reading the second, do I have to read the first one before I can roll again?
I will be reading it soon, I just had to get a hold of it!

Melissa, it doesn't matter the order in which you read the 3 planned books BUT you'd have to finish reading one first before you can roll again.

message 92: by Charity (new)

Charity | 577 comments Tien - not that I'm anywhere close to being in this situation, but I was wondering if you have to complete your entire list even if you've read your last slice of pie.

For example if Lynn finishes her last slice of pie, but still has duplicates to read on her list is she done or does she need to complete her list first? (Lynn was just the easiest example to use, not picking on her :-) ) Thanks!

message 93: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9032 comments Mod
Good question, Charity. Yes, you do have to complete reading your entire list :)

message 94: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1223 comments Question: I've collected 10 slices of pie and still have the 11th to read. Can I choose my 12th slice book (Pork Pie – Indigo: Fantasy) now or do I have to wait until I've read the book for slice #11?

message 95: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9032 comments Mod
#8 says "8. As we are using 2 dice, we cannot roll a "1" so "1" will be the LAST Colour to be read / claimed AFTER you have read / claimed Colours #2-12."

so you can't claim #1 (fantasy) before you claim your 11th slice.

message 96: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1223 comments Thanks Tien. This gives me incentive to read the book I picked for #11, which I have been putting off.
