SOLVED. Novel were the main character, a boy, seemingly dies and wakes up in an abandoned version of the world being hunted by an entity possibly called the grim reaper. [s]

Remember almost nothing about this book apart from the main character is a boy, he eventually encounters two other characters, one is a smaller boy and the other is a more teenage black girl and her signature thing is that she smokes silk cut cigarettes

As far as I remember the book cover is black with white lines across is forming a grid and there’s some yellow in it too

I am a thousand percent sure this is your book. More Than This by Patrick Ness.

MC tries to kill himself and wakes up in his old town and is chased by a Grim Reaper type entity and makes friends with two other kids who are also awake in this world.

It is a little like the Matrix as well.
