SOLVED. A young female army nurse adopts a fox as a pet and names it Aliska. I read it around sometime between 2005-10, but not sure when it was actually published nor do i know the original language in which the book was published. Spoilers ahead. [s]

I read the book in Telugu and the title was Aliska, but i'm not able to find it anywhere. I'm sure it's a translated version because the names of the characters are not Indian as far as i remember.

So the army nurse adopts this fox and they stay together for a few years and they share a bond. They love each other so much. I guess the nurse lives with her mother, or aunt, or someone who never liked Aliska much. One day, the nurse had to go to some other town for work and she left Aliska back home. By the time she got back, she could not find the fox anywhere and asked the other woman in the house about it. She carelessly replied that she didn't bother. The nurse regretted leaving the fox behind and was crestfallen for many days thinking about the happy time she shared with her loving pet. After may be a couple of months she finds a small dog-sized animal's footprints outside her window in the snow. She was almost sure that they were Aliska's, but it was never revealed in the book.
