Prequel to Maze Runner series. I read this book in the last 1-2 years, but can't remember if this is a series or a single book. I think I found the book on goodreads looking through my dystopian selection's recommendations 2 or 3 times removed. i.e. if you like Allegiant read XXXX, if you like XXXX read YYYY, if you like YYYY read MY MISSING BOOK. SPOILER ALERT I remember no names except that there is a minor character named "the toad" cause he looks like one and he is part of a trio or minor characters (2 boys one girl). The story goes back and forth between present and flashbacks, but the timeline is as follows. Boy (main character) and girl are on a subway on the way home for vacation from school. The train stops and everyone leaves the train in a panic except them. Outside there is a massive sun burst/flare that immediately kills anyone or burns them badly, but they don't know it yet?. The 2 hide in the subway tunnels from crazy maniac people, but they join with a military older man, his friend (female military nurse?) and a few other young people. I think there is 3 additional boys and another girl. A flood comes and the group heads into a skyscraper from the tunnels. One boy dies in the escape by being swept away in the flooded tunnels. They stay in the skyscraper to stay out of the direct sunlight/radiation. They end up stealing a boat from a couple trying to steal their supplies. It jumps to the group ending up in the mountains (Appalachians?) and join with many others to create a community, but I don't remember much about the community except that it is made of leanto houses. A military hover ship comes and shoots darts at the community instead of dropping off supplies. They later find out the dart is filled with a virus to solve the overpopulation/lack of resources in the world. The virus mutates and instead of killing people, it makes them crazy, talking about something living in their head. The main boy and the military guy take over the next ship and determine from a tablet where a bunker is that the ship came from. The bunker is hidden by a rotating disk that allows the large ships to leave, but is hidden with trees and bushes on one side of the disk. While trying to locate the bunker the rest of their small group slowly becomes infected and/or get taken by infected people that they have to rescue. They also find another village was attacked, but a survivor is a little girl who was shot by the dart but doesn't get sick and her village abandons her. In the end everyone gets infected, but the military man and main male character find the last transport door to the government is closing. They pin a note to the little girl that she is the key to end the spread of the virus, put her through the door and crash the hover plane so none of the other infected people can get through. I just remembered this is the prequel to maze runner and the little girl becomes teresa!
