I believe that’s books per month on average but I’m not 100% sure.

Amanda (writers_soul) | 426 comments Yay we have a name! 😊

Sarah (sjohnson33071) | 191 comments Another question - are we allowed to read books we are also reading as part of another NBRC challenge?

Amanda (writers_soul) | 426 comments Sarah wrote: "Another question - are we allowed to read books we are also reading as part of another NBRC challenge?"

I think so as long as it isn’t another team challenge. But it would be a good question for the thread to ask the admins!

message 55: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 3010 comments There's no need to ask separately - of course you can double up and use the same book for various team challenges, Sarah :)

And yay to the team name! I guess the mods came across our restaurant name in the spreadsheet and since we still hadn't submitted a proper team name they used that one.
Amanda, do you wanna write a little something about our restaurant?

message 56: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 3010 comments Also, YES, 'books p/m av' stands for books per month on average! I just used the numbers from the 'looking for a team' thread that have been mentioned there but not everyone shared an average # of books they read (or can read) in a month which is also okay. Just let me know now if you can or add your # to the ss.

Sure I can do that! Anything specific we want our restaurant to be about/ themes?

well we like books and we like booze, and we obviously have to serve food as well 😂 so anything would be fine really. it doesn't even have to be long

Christina (chrissy__) | 3010 comments do you folks usually take part in BOMs? because I don't know if you've already seen this (if you haven't I suggest you turn on notifications for various threads that are important for this challenge):

"HOT NEWS- Customer Bonus

For every team member that participates in a Book of the Month (BOM) (by joining the discussion and/or writing discussion questions) they will be able to swap out one assigned customer for another of their choice.

Limited to one customer for each team member per BOM. (i.e. you can't get the customer bonus for writing DQs AND participating. But if you join 2 BOMs in October, you can get 2 bonuses).

This bonus will be available for BOMs that start after the challenge begins. That means Chain of Gold will be your first opportunity to earn the bonus."

I don’t do BOM personally as I 99% of the time never have the books.

message 61: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sjohnson33071) | 191 comments I would love to read the BOM this month as I love Cassandra Clare. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to have the book - depends if it comes in the library fast enough or if I gave the extra money to buy it. I would love to read it though.

I’ve never participated in a BOM in the group - do I have to do anything special to participate?

message 62: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sjohnson33071) | 191 comments Also I went back to the “all about my restaurant rocks” to look at the meals, etc and don’t see the rules? All I see are photos and “r” from the mods. Any help?

message 63: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (writers_soul) | 426 comments Here is a little write up, I’ve never written about a restaurant before so I just winged it! If you want anything changed/added just let me know!

“Tequila Mockingbird is a family resistant situated on the rocky shores of Maine. We serve everything from fish and chips to curries (beef, lamb or chicken!). We have alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to fulfill every need! Lastly, remember to save some room for dessert, you never know what delicious sweets await you! We look forward to serving you and giving you an experience you won’t soon forget! Indoor and outdoor dining available.”

I think you have to participate in the threads a certain amount of times by a certain date, but I could be wrong. I’ve never done them before. Also I sometimes have the issues with the “r” message showing up when I’m on my phone. I just checked and was not having that issue today. We’re you accessing from the phone or a computer?

Christina (chrissy__) | 3010 comments I always love taking part in BOMs for other team challenges because of the bonus points, but neither of the upcoming BOMs are appealing to me :( I might listen to the audiobook of Truly Devious though if I can find it anywhere.

In order to be able to swap out customers thanks to BOM participation, you'll either need to answer 3 sets of DQs, or you can sign up to write DQs (Discussion Questions) in time.

I'll post all BOM discussion links (and everything else that's important) in this post (message #7) on page 1 for anyone interested.

My main issue is I can never get my hands on the books, most of the time my library doesn’t get brand new releases or if they do the waiting list is ridiculous. I don’t usually have the extra funds to buy new books all the time. I buy a lot of used books.

this is so good!!!!! but I feel like our restaurant name sounds a bit more,,,,, hardcore? 🙈😂 like less serious and more into booze? 🤣

message 68: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sjohnson33071) | 191 comments I agree that we need a bit more of a boozy atmosphere in the description 😂 thanks Christina for the info on the BOM participation!

Amanda do they have a store near you called “half price books”? They sell used books (and buy!) and also sell some new books for half price (hence the name). That’s usually where I shop if I can’t get something at my library.

Okay 😂 I’ll add more of a booze vibe, I don’t drink so I wasn’t sure where to go with that lol but I’ll update and repost later tonight ☺️

No I wish 😭 we have no used book stores. My nearest barnes and nobel is an hour away, books a million is two hours away. Any other book stores are about 2 hours + away. Everything has to be ordered online unless I happen to pick it up at the grocery store or get it as a gift.

message 71: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 3010 comments I just saw Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare is available on scribd, and so is the audiobook of Truly Devious and the ebook of Circe (the last two are October's BOMs if I'm not mistaken).

if you don't have scribd yet and want to join through my link (https://www.scribd.com/g/7pjk7c) you'll get two free trial months instead of just one and I'll get a free month as well :) and obviously you don't have to keep using it once your trial months are over 😏

Awesome thank you! I’ll sign up probably for October reads. I’ve been interested in Circe.

Sarah (sjohnson33071) | 191 comments Only 2 days away! So do we need to plan and discuss what books we are reading or just read, read, read? Is someone going to take lead on the spreadsheet editing or is it a fend-for-yourself scenario?

I definitely will need some hand holding along the way...but I’m super excited and ready to go!

I think the plan is to just read read read for now :) I believe we agreed to post in the thread and then have one or two members work on the spreadsheet to keep everything simpler, but don’t quote me on that!

You choose one or the other per book. it is a lot of rules but it will be easier once we get going :)

message 78: by Jodi (new)

Jodi | 14 comments Yeah, I might need some hand holding too ;) Lol

message 79: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 3010 comments As for scavenger hunt or spell-it-out, I think the best way would still be to list EVERY food word /ingredient you come across in your book AND EVERY letter your book would work for for the spell-it-out so we could still decide how to use a book at a later point or switch a book around if needed.

message 80: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 3010 comments Do y'all have access to the spreadsheet or no?

ALSO!!!! The challenge still starts on September 19th, so it's still 4-ish more days to go! (I linked the countdown to the start in message 7 about a week ago)

Sounds good to me. I know I’m planning on going heavy with the scavenger hunt verses the spell it out, but I’ll still have some spell it out books as well.

I can view the spreadsheet but not edit it.

Sarah (sjohnson33071) | 191 comments Ok now I know it begins tomorrow!! Do we communicate on meals we are trying to make and things we are trying to spell out? Can we make a meal out of a single book if it has multiple ingredients listed in the pages? Ahhhhh I’m getting so overwhelmed!!!

message 84: by Christina (last edited Sep 18, 2020 05:45PM) (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 3010 comments Sarah wrote: "Do we communicate on meals we are trying to make and things we are trying to spell out?"

I created a TRACKING SPREADSHEET (soon to be link, still needs work; will also be linked on page 1, msg 7) which you're all very welcome (and encouraged) to use. I added my first two planned reads so far so you can see how it's used (it's just a copied and slightly changed version of the official spreadsheet).
I also added the 'kitchen meals' tab from the official ss where you can plan out meals as well, whether you want to cover them all by yourself or want someone to jump in if they can. I was thinking each one of us can come up with words to spell out for certain meals with the books we're respectively already working with anyway, but let each other know if we still need a specific letter (eg just leave it out on the ss).

I'm not sure I phrased this in a way that makes sense, so please let me know if I need to get into this again 🙈

Sarah wrote: "Can we make a meal out of a single book if it has multiple ingredients listed in the pages?"

depending on page count (and audiobook length for children's, graphic novels, poetry etc) you can use a book several times.

up to 2 scavenger words / spell-it out letters per book >50 pages and <=160 pages
up to 4 scavenger words/ spell-it out letters per book >161 and <=300 pages
up to 8 scavenger words/ spell-it out letters per book >301 pages and <=500 pages
up to 12 scavenger words / spell-it-out letters per book >501 pages

message 85: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 3010 comments while I'm struggling with the tracking sheet I suggest y'all watch this video (again) in the meantime ;)

message 86: by Christina (last edited Sep 18, 2020 06:14PM) (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 3010 comments here's our TRACKING SHEET !

I couldn't make the second tab work as it does in the official spreadsheet, so you'll have to copy some things from the first tab. you (and everybody else who comes across this link) should have editing rights.
please stay away from the green cells in tab 1, they work as they're supposed to as of right now (that's me jinxing it now, sorry)

if you have any ideas on how to make things easier, please let me know 🙈

message 87: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sjohnson33071) | 191 comments Thanks Christina. I did give the video another watch and picked up that a book can be chosen to use for spell it out OR scavenger hunt so that’s where I was getting confused. I think it’ll be confusing for a little bit until we all get the hang of it. Hope everyone is ready and excited 😄

message 90: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (writers_soul) | 426 comments I get to start at 5pm my time today and will be starting easy with Milk and Honey. This one will be all scavenger and no spell it out due to the nature of the book.

message 91: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sjohnson33071) | 191 comments I have started a book “A Curse so Dark and Lonely” which will be used for scavenger as I’ve already run into tons of food items. 478 pages.

Also reading The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert which I will probably use for spell it out.

message 92: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sjohnson33071) | 191 comments The Hazel Wood is 359 pages. Sorry about that.

message 93: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 3010 comments Sarah, as you've already started the book it won't count towards the challenge as it only starts in about 3 hours unfortunately

message 94: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sjohnson33071) | 191 comments I haven’t actually I meant starting today. I will make sure it counts :) I won’t be home from work to start anything for another 4 hours.

Sarah (sjohnson33071) | 191 comments Sorry I realize it may sound confusing that I already know about the foods in the Curse book / I began it about 9 months ago and put it down after just a few chapters as I didn’t have time to finish. 🙂 I will begin the official challenge in about 4 hours
