Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion
My Restaurant Rocks 2020

Team Tequila Mockingbird

I think so as long as it isn’t another team challenge. But it would be a good question for the thread to ask the admins!

And yay to the team name! I guess the mods came across our restaurant name in the spreadsheet and since we still hadn't submitted a proper team name they used that one.
Amanda, do you wanna write a little something about our restaurant?

Sure I can do that! Anything specific we want our restaurant to be about/ themes?

well we like books and we like booze, and we obviously have to serve food as well 😂 so anything would be fine really. it doesn't even have to be long

"HOT NEWS- Customer Bonus
For every team member that participates in a Book of the Month (BOM) (by joining the discussion and/or writing discussion questions) they will be able to swap out one assigned customer for another of their choice.
Limited to one customer for each team member per BOM. (i.e. you can't get the customer bonus for writing DQs AND participating. But if you join 2 BOMs in October, you can get 2 bonuses).
This bonus will be available for BOMs that start after the challenge begins. That means Chain of Gold will be your first opportunity to earn the bonus."

I don’t do BOM personally as I 99% of the time never have the books.

I’ve never participated in a BOM in the group - do I have to do anything special to participate?

“Tequila Mockingbird is a family resistant situated on the rocky shores of Maine. We serve everything from fish and chips to curries (beef, lamb or chicken!). We have alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to fulfill every need! Lastly, remember to save some room for dessert, you never know what delicious sweets await you! We look forward to serving you and giving you an experience you won’t soon forget! Indoor and outdoor dining available.”

I think you have to participate in the threads a certain amount of times by a certain date, but I could be wrong. I’ve never done them before. Also I sometimes have the issues with the “r” message showing up when I’m on my phone. I just checked and was not having that issue today. We’re you accessing from the phone or a computer?

In order to be able to swap out customers thanks to BOM participation, you'll either need to answer 3 sets of DQs, or you can sign up to write DQs (Discussion Questions) in time.
I'll post all BOM discussion links (and everything else that's important) in this post (message #7) on page 1 for anyone interested.

My main issue is I can never get my hands on the books, most of the time my library doesn’t get brand new releases or if they do the waiting list is ridiculous. I don’t usually have the extra funds to buy new books all the time. I buy a lot of used books.

this is so good!!!!! but I feel like our restaurant name sounds a bit more,,,,, hardcore? 🙈😂 like less serious and more into booze? 🤣

Amanda do they have a store near you called “half price books”? They sell used books (and buy!) and also sell some new books for half price (hence the name). That’s usually where I shop if I can’t get something at my library.

Okay 😂 I’ll add more of a booze vibe, I don’t drink so I wasn’t sure where to go with that lol but I’ll update and repost later tonight ☺️

No I wish 😭 we have no used book stores. My nearest barnes and nobel is an hour away, books a million is two hours away. Any other book stores are about 2 hours + away. Everything has to be ordered online unless I happen to pick it up at the grocery store or get it as a gift.

if you don't have scribd yet and want to join through my link (https://www.scribd.com/g/7pjk7c) you'll get two free trial months instead of just one and I'll get a free month as well :) and obviously you don't have to keep using it once your trial months are over 😏

Awesome thank you! I’ll sign up probably for October reads. I’ve been interested in Circe.

I definitely will need some hand holding along the way...but I’m super excited and ready to go!

I think the plan is to just read read read for now :) I believe we agreed to post in the thread and then have one or two members work on the spreadsheet to keep everything simpler, but don’t quote me on that!

You choose one or the other per book. it is a lot of rules but it will be easier once we get going :)

ALSO!!!! The challenge still starts on September 19th, so it's still 4-ish more days to go! (I linked the countdown to the start in message 7 about a week ago)

Sounds good to me. I know I’m planning on going heavy with the scavenger hunt verses the spell it out, but I’ll still have some spell it out books as well.

I can view the spreadsheet but not edit it.

I created a TRACKING SPREADSHEET (soon to be link, still needs work; will also be linked on page 1, msg 7) which you're all very welcome (and encouraged) to use. I added my first two planned reads so far so you can see how it's used (it's just a copied and slightly changed version of the official spreadsheet).
I also added the 'kitchen meals' tab from the official ss where you can plan out meals as well, whether you want to cover them all by yourself or want someone to jump in if they can. I was thinking each one of us can come up with words to spell out for certain meals with the books we're respectively already working with anyway, but let each other know if we still need a specific letter (eg just leave it out on the ss).
I'm not sure I phrased this in a way that makes sense, so please let me know if I need to get into this again 🙈
Sarah wrote: "Can we make a meal out of a single book if it has multiple ingredients listed in the pages?"
depending on page count (and audiobook length for children's, graphic novels, poetry etc) you can use a book several times.
up to 2 scavenger words / spell-it out letters per book >50 pages and <=160 pages
up to 4 scavenger words/ spell-it out letters per book >161 and <=300 pages
up to 8 scavenger words/ spell-it out letters per book >301 pages and <=500 pages
up to 12 scavenger words / spell-it-out letters per book >501 pages

I couldn't make the second tab work as it does in the official spreadsheet, so you'll have to copy some things from the first tab. you (and everybody else who comes across this link) should have editing rights.
please stay away from the green cells in tab 1, they work as they're supposed to as of right now (that's me jinxing it now, sorry)
if you have any ideas on how to make things easier, please let me know 🙈

Also reading The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert which I will probably use for spell it out.

sorry haha I read it as in ~you've started those books earlier today! thanks for clarifying ;)

I believe that’s books per month on average but I’m not 100% sure.
