around 2016 i read a book from my local library that had a blue cover and it was about two brothers who go on a trip with their mother who is a scientist, arriving to her work site area in a helicopter, and i believe the two brothers go off on their own in the wilderness and try to reconnect with the spirit of their deceased father. towards the middle of the book theres a weird flash back where they tell a story about a girl who was hanging off of the side of a boat and her parents who she had a disagreement with cut their own daughters fingers off so that they got rid of her, which obviously resulted in her dead. for the life of me i cannot remember the name of this book or the author who wrote it, i only remember that it was really weird, most likely YA and it had a blue cover. if anyone could help me i would appreciate it.

Robert, that's good to know! I'm 90% certain this is it. I just couldn't find an online preview to verify that all of the OP's plot points were included.
im not sure when or how the father died, that book visions sounds similar too it but im not sure if it is it, if i can recall correctly im pretty sure they talk to their fathers spirit of something towards the end

it was the book!! thanks so much, i just read it! crazy how much it turned out to relate to my current life situation considering i read it over 6 years ago when i couldnt relate to it at all.thanks for the help!!
