Teri-K Honestly, it looks "orangey" to me, though not bright orange. But I'm going to let the mods look at this for sure. I'd hate to approve it and then have them disagree when it's time for you to claim your points.

So I'll get back to you on this one.

Pia I think I'm changing books.

Would any of the following be ok?

For Option 1 "Close but not quite"

Task 20.4 Gold Digger, which takes place in the "British Seaside" and the UK is not allowed for this task

Task 25.2 The Sandman, translated from the Swedish, which is not a Romance Language

Task 30.7 Little Bee by Chris Cleave , not enough orange in cover

Also for Option 2: Try, try again...

The Devil's Star which I started over a year (or more) ago and just can't make any progress!

As long as Gold Digger is set in the UK it will work, but you'll have to verify that when you read it as there's no setting given in the GR descriptions.

Books translated from Swedish are allowed for 25.2. And Little Bee will work because it is bright orange, as required, but perhaps not 50%, more like 40%. (Just a little bright orange wouldn't be enough.)

Of course the Nesbo book will work for option 2, if you can read it all this time. :)

The verdict is yes, this is orange but not bright, so it works. :) (I'd call it burnt orange, myself.)

I love letters and epistolary novels, so I've added this to my TBR. Thanks!

So I been thinking how we could bring about Geek mythology. Read a book where any character from Greek, Roman, etc mythology or Arthurian legend is a main character and is set in a school setting. Avalon High comes to mind :)

That could work. :)

I'll admit I thought of a statue of a god holding a slide rule. lol But I'm not sure anyone has written a book where a character from mythology wears a pocket protector and waves a slide rule. Perhaps an abacus?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3044 comments Hades could be dressed as a goth and Aphrodite can be prom queen and Artemis is Senior class president. Eros can be big man on campus and Hepthestis (sp?) can be president of shop club or something. The nymphs can be cheerleaders :) The Sirens can be in Glee Club. :) Oh and we can't forget about Ares. He is captain of the football team-the Titans :)

Teri-K Donna wrote: "I am a total newbie. Can this task be completed at any time once it is posted or do we have to complete a majority of other tasks first?"

Good question! You can do the tasks in any order you want and you can only do the tasks that interest you or do them all. So do this one whenever you like. You just have to complete and post all three of your chosen options at one time, not Option 1 one day and Option 3 two weeks later, etc.

The reason this task isn't posted along with the others at the beginning is that you "win" the chance to write this task by having the highest score on the Readerboard at the challenge's half-way point. (If that makes sense.) But once it's up - have at it!

From one newbie to another - welcome and have fun! Feel free to ask any other questions here or on the "Task Help - General Questions" thread. I've found that people get back to you very quickly.

Yes, Persephone is OK, no children's present, if you get the length verified in the "eBook Verification- no print edition" thread, since it is only in e-book form.

Kim | 764 comments Will this work for option 1? It doesn't meet the requirements for option 2 of task 30.8 (the cover is not 75% red).

The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry A Novel by Gabrielle Zevin

Thank you

message 118: by Teri-K (new)

Teri-K The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry A Novel by Gabrielle Zevin This particular cover will work for 30.8 Option 2 because there's a lot of red, probably 50%, but not 75%. And red is the color you'd remember if you saw this cover in a store.

Lot's of people I know loved this book; I didn't, but hopefully you will. :)

50.1 Option 1

Book read... Then being surprised by How short it was and that it seems to ONLY be published on Kindle

Ride The Dark Tide by Christopher Kenworthy
Ride The Dark Tide

I was trying to read it for 30.4 Title with "a body of water" in it but then it turned out Not to have a paperback/printed version (and it was very disappointing to be so short)

Will it work for 50.1 Option 1

This is tricky, stick with me as I work this out...

Did you try getting it verified for length in the "eBook Verification- no print edition" thread? Books without a print edition can be listed there and if approved they will work for most tasks. If it can be verified on that thread then it might have worked for 30.4 Option 1, as I don't see anything there that says you can't use an e-book or that it must be a certain length.

So as it stands now it won't work for this task either. If it can be approved on the verification thread and would have worked for 30.4 Option 1, it doesn't fit Option 1 here. If it's actually too short to be approved at all then it won't work here because the books used for the task must fit general SRC guidelines, including length.

However, here's when this book would work. If it's verified for length on the thread but gets turned down for 30.4 Option 1 because a "tide" isn't a body of water, then you could use it. And, since "wave" was apparently turned down, you might try that route.

BTW - Even if you've already claimed task 30.4, I'm sure they wouldn't mind your going back to the help thread and asking if they would allow "Tide" as a body of water.

Good luck. :)

Whatever you want. :) I find it fascinating when people bring me tricky questions, as it lets me dig around into "What did I mean, anyway". But it's all up to you.

But what specifically are they for?
If I were to go to the 24 - rooms and i'm not 24, i'm 27, what does that mean?
Are we supposed to be reading and discussing the books that are posted?

Hi, Phylicia,

I'm not sure what you're saying. The numbers before each task are an organizing method. All 5-something tasks are worth 5 points, 10-something worth 10, etc. So this task, 50.1, is worth 50 points in the challenge. The numbers after the period are just a way to keep track of individual tasks. 5.1, 5.2, etc, so we can refer to them easily.

Sorry if that's not what you're referring to. I'm not sure what you mean by rooms. We generally call the places where we talk "threads". This is the "help thread" for task 50.1, for instance.

Maybe if you go here:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
it will help get you oriented. If you've read that already or it doesn't make sense to you feel free to ask more questions. I'm happy to help if I can. This is my first time doing this challenge and there's a lot to take in when you're new. :)

Morgan (faeriesfolly) | 923 comments Hi Teri,

Just wanted to double check a book for close/not quite:

It doesn't fit 30.8, option 6 -- As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride (and is on the DQ list) -- but the actual book the Princess Bride would--and the task is based on it. Since this is about the making of the movie (aka the actors/actresses) and not actually princesses/pirates.

Am I right in thinking that works? The end is closing in and paranoia is the king of the day. lol.

30.8 Option 6 says: "Read a book in which royalty (defined for this task as: prince, queen, king, or princess) or pirates (or both!) play a significant role."

Your book was turned down (by you, lol) in the help thread because it isn't actually about a princess or a pirate. But it is about people pretending to be both. And it's definitely in the spirit of the option to honor the movie.

I'd call that "Close but not Quite". Enjoy your book. :)

Luckily I got to turn it down for someone else after turning it down silently to myself while trying to pick options. haha.

Oddly, I found my own task as one of the harder ones for me to pin down options for--I wonder if that's common?

Thanks :D Glad it has a home since my brother got it for me for Christmas.

Teri-K Morgan, reply button not working...

I wrote this entire task around one book that I really wanted to read. I'd just gotten my hands on My Brother Michael for the first time in decades and I wanted to read it sooo badly. I found plenty of places it would fit but I'd have had to bump other books I also wanted to read. Then I thought I'd found the perfect slot only to realize it said "no rereads".

So I wrote Option 1, then brainstormed a bunch of other tasks and worked on finding a theme that could tie some of them together. I didn't know which other options I would choose until after the task got posted. All I cared about was getting Michael in. (And yes, it was worth it. I loved it just as much as I'd remembered.)

Aww it's always nice when you can read a book like that. I had several re-reads this time that I was able to fit in as audiobooks when tasks allowed, and it made me so happy to revisit them.

Also funnily enough (to me at least) it was my actual brother Michael who got me the book. haha.

message 135: by Narumon (new)

Narumon Could I use Die Again by Tess Gerritsen for Option 1? I was so excited by the next Rizzoli and Isles book was coming out during the seasonal challenge and I thought for sure I can fit it in. I planned on using it for 25.5's Option 1 (read a book that is 12th in a series or contains the word twelve in the title)... only to realize that this books is book #11.

Also, clarification on Option #5. My New Year's Resolution(s) are 1) use books to explore different cultures/religions, and b)be a better citizen of the world by learning about important events that happened in my lifetime. Would something like Fukushima: The Story of a Nuclear Disaster work or is that too much of a stretch?

Thank you!

message 136: by Teri-K (new)

Teri-K Both of those are fine. #11 is so close to #12 in a series I think it fits. And if you've resolved to learn more about important events from your lifetime then that book should definitely fit. A resolution doesn't have to be about changing something, it can just as well be learning or growing in some way.

Enjoy them both.

Yes, it will work. It's not a candle, but it could have been one. Even with my reading glasses I had to go pull my copy off the shelf and check to tell for sure. :)

Just be sure to post the cover when you claim it, as you were required to do in the original task.
