Ruth Kaufman (ruth_kaufman) | 52 comments Hello! Yesterday, 1/14/15, two versions of my medieval romance released: AT HIS COMMAND-Historical Romance Version (hero on the cover, see above) and AT HIS COMMAND-Inspirational Version (heroine on the cover).

They're in the GR database, but aren't on my author profile. I've already been asked why. I'd appreciate any assistance. Thank you in advance!

Abcdarian | 26579 comments Just FYI: Your author profile uses 2 spaces between first and last names to differentiate you from the other Ruth Kaufman/s. If you are adding the books yourself, just insert an extra space and they should go to your profile. Otherwise a librarian can easily add the needed space, which is invisible for all other purposes.

Alex | 2736 comments Yep that was me.

You should know, your profile is under Ruth^^Kaufman, where each ^ is a space, so those spaces need to be put in put in for a book to be correctly sorted into your profile. These spaces are only visible from the edit pages, not during normal viewing and are used to differentiate between same-named authors. In future, if you inform librarians that yours is the 2-space profile when making such requests, that would be really helpful.

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you take a look at the 1-space profile for your name, in case there are other books of yours accidentally misplaced?

Ruth Kaufman (ruth_kaufman) | 52 comments Thank you!!! I wasn't aware of that. Thank you Alex & Philip.

Ruth Kaufman (ruth_kaufman) | 52 comments Since you've been so helpful, perhaps you know the answer to this (which I searched for, but couldn't find): is there a way to rearrange the order in which my published books appear? I'd like my new fiction releases to be displayed before the older non-fiction. Thank you.

message 7: by Philip (new)

Philip (burnnerman) | 5912 comments #6 - The order they appear is by the most reviewed/shelved/rated.

I have not seen anyway to change that order.

message 8: by Alex (new)

Alex | 2736 comments Actually, I have a question, are the two books different in that each is told from the perspective of a different character?

message 9: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Kaufman (ruth_kaufman) | 52 comments Thank you, Philip.
Alex, that would be a great idea! Maybe I'll do that next. The difference: the book with the heroine on the cover, which I call the Inspirational Version, has a faith element and is sweet/mild. The Historical Romance Version, with the hero on the cover, does not have a faith element and opens the bedroom door, as they say. Thank you for asking.

The books were featured yesterday in USAToday's romance blog:

Alex | 2736 comments Hmmm, I'm not sure whether that means the two should be combined (separate listings, pooled reviews) or not...

message 11: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Kaufman (ruth_kaufman) | 52 comments Hello Alex,

1) I just saw the part of your email about checking the 1-space profile for my name. I don't have any other books. Yet?

2) As to combining the two, I hadn't thought about that. I'm still learning the ins/outs of GR. I hope I get reviews!

I think they should be separate. Though the story is the same, the Inspirational Version is intended for readers of that subgenre, who prefer mild/sweet romances with a faith element. The Historical Romance Version has some content that may offend or be off-putting to those readers. Meanwhile, HRV readers may not be interested in discussions of the religious content.

What do you think?

message 12: by Alex (new)

Alex | 2736 comments 1) Thanks for checking!

I agree. If the differences are significant enough to place each in a different subgenre, it would cause the genre on GR to become inaccurate, I believe, if they were combined.

message 13: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Kaufman (ruth_kaufman) | 52 comments Thank you! I believe I'm the first author to do this (I know of a few who've done spicy and less spicy versions). I knew I wanted to put out two versions and do my best not to confuse readers, but hadn't thought much beyond that in terms of reviews. And I'm surprised a) how many people have said they want to read both to see what's different and b) how many authors have contacted me wanting to know details and results. So I'm working on a workshop and will be writing articles.

Alex | 2736 comments It's a great idea and it seems successfully done. Congrats! :)

While this precise situation is new, the general situation is not. And we do combine such editions into a single work. I have also moved Historical Romance Version and Inspirational Version to the edition fields.

Ruth, only one cover will show up on your profile. You can choose which one though. If you want to switch, here's how: https://www.goodreads.com/help/show/3...

message 17: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Kaufman (ruth_kaufman) | 52 comments Thank you for the information, Rivka. If you're collecting comments on combining editions in a case like mine, I'm against it as a reader and an author.

Author Ruth: I've been working very hard in my promotion to differentiate the two versions by the covers and the version title. There's no way I could find to easily navigate to the heroine's cover on GR if I choose the hero's cover to display...unless I happen to mouse over the cover.

Reader Ruth: There's no way I could find to search for the other version by a word search, either. And if no GR member can find it, how can they add it to their shelves and review it?

I'm targeting two distinctly different groups of readers. Yet if I choose to put the hero's cover up, targeting readers who don't like inspirationals but do like the open bedroom door, no reader who does like inspirationals can find their version. Each book is on Amazon in a different category, and each title has the version in the name.

Perhaps GR could at least add a link somewhere on the book's page to ______________ version, and let the author name the link?

Thank you.

Renske | 12233 comments About finding the other edition, if people search for the ISBN or ASIN they will directly go to the specific edition. Or people know they can go to 'all editions' of a work.
But adding links in the description to the other edition sounds like an useful idea for this case.
