Not about pizza abominations (see the Prep thread!) but a reminder that you only have a few days left to suggest a book for our November BOMs.
Head over here to suggest a title!

Closing in one week one and some of the neighbours are noticing these new restaurants under construction.

We've promised them that by the end of week 2 spreadsheets will be mostly up to date so they can start checking out what meals may entice

pssst. That means update your spreadsheets as much as possible at the end of week 2 please so we can check for any inactive teams or issues with spreadsheets. Thanks!

We will be reading the fabulous Circe from 2 October, as the Adult BOM. As you know, participation in the BOM gives you bouncer rights to change a customer. One easy way to participate is to write a set of questions!

Please head over here to volunteer to write questions - it's easy, fun and no-one judges: it's like Bake Off with no Paul or Prue! You know you want to!

I am so intimidated by this. My restaurant description is not up to snuff!

Good to know :)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6412 comments Hee Hee, Melissa.

What I've learned in this challenge.. that coffee is the beverage of choice in the books I read. Characters are drowning in the stuff, LOL.

anyone else been tempted to curry various fruit or dessert items? So. Many. Cakes in books where I can't use them for desserts! X(

Not curry, but contemplating how to creativity use them for sure.

Jenny | 8056 comments Cake for dunking in coffee. Surely that is a thing somewhere.

I'd give in to the temptation. Mango and banana in curry.. yep, I've done it. And how about the Aussie favourite Apricot Chicken Curry. We lived on it as children of the 70's.

I am reading a book where the mother keeps putting bananas in curry but the MC insists this is why he cannot invite people over

So much coffee.
No coffee cakes though, curiously.

bananas in curry?
Never heard of such a thing.

Ick I've even eaten it! My mom tricked me into it. Honestly, the worst thing I've ever eaten **shivers**

Chunks of it all slimy!
Ugh! 🤢🤢🤢

If it was liqified and put in the sauce it might not be noticable. But still sounds strange.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6412 comments I think the idea is either to add the dried banana chips or add the fresh banana and gently heat it through at the end so it retains its form.

So that's a general thumbs down to banana in curry then.. Point taken, Lolololol.

message 81: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 3010 comments I've had curry with banana in it before and I didn't mind it? I mean sure I didn't need it in there, but it wasn't so bad *shrugs*

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 949 comments Still no, I do not like them much straight out of the skin, nore in a fruit salad. It is not so much a taste thing as is is texture.
But I will take your gals word on it, and just personally try to avoid it as I do other food items.

message 83: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8056 comments For those who don't like the texture of banana, there is always banana cream pie. Or, banana pudding. I love banana strawberry yogurt personally.
Fruit in savory dishes can be wonderful. Another favorite is pulled pork with braised peaches. mmmmm.

Bananas in curry can be quite tasty a lot of the curry houses sell it over here marketed as Malayan Curry. I am not a big lover of fruit and other than bananas and strawberries I generally only eat them when cooked in a sweet or savoury dish.

message 86: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1896 comments This challenge has me pretty fixated on different types of food :) The dessert my character receives in A Gentleman in Moscow is a mille-feuille. I looked it up and it looks delicious.
Has anyone tried one of these before?

(I'm still on the fence about bananas in curry, but I will use them in the challenge if I have a bunch of other Malayan items to use :)

message 87: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13002 comments Yeah, mille-feuille were a pretty popular treat in the Netherlands when I lived there for a while. Not a huge fan personally, but that's just down to personal preference.
We've got vanilla slices in the UK, which are pretty similar, but again not one of my personal favourites.

message 88: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13002 comments As for bananas, they're best on toast. Or on pancakes with a generous amount of chocolate (dark for me please!) and maybe a few strawberries too.

This challenge has made me permanently hungry and I've gained 3lbs this month! Thanks for that Karen! :P

Round 1 Complete - what to expect for round 2

Thanks cooks, chefs and kitchen hands - you have survived the opening of your restaurant and round 1 customers. Phew!

Frozen Meals from round 1 not consumed
Can be used in round 2. You should copy and paste these from your Shop Front Round 1 to the Shop Front Round 2 tab (Note: column D on the round 2 tab won't populate - don't worry we will fix it up)

Desserts, Drinks and Cocktails from round 1 not consumed
Can be used in round 2 or round 3. You should copy and paste those you want to use in round 2 from your Shop Front Round 1 to the Shop Front Round 2 tab (Note: column D on the round 2 tab won't populate - don't worry we will fix it up)

Fresh Food from round 1 not consumed
Fresh food not used will be rotten unless you received tips from adults to preserve.

13-16 10% of adults tipped

Books read cap
For round 2, it is 90 books per team

Customers round 2
The exact number of customers won't be known until they arrive, but be sure it will increase for round 2 as your restaurants gain in popularity!!

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6412 comments I think I am going to have withdrawal symptoms! Who knew so many books had vinegar in them... and how few had ube!

You outdid yourselves with this one, Mods. One we settled in with it, it was great fun for those who stayed the distance.

Thank you and happy holidays all.

Tina ❣ (nutrinut) | 2000 comments Thanks mods for a really interesting and enjoyable challenge! I enjoyed it greatly and know my team did too.

Hope everyone has a great holiday :)

message 94: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8056 comments Show of hands...how many of us knew there was such a thing as Ube before this challenge? I had to look it up. If I am not mistaken I also learned that there was such a thing as a Pink Fairy Armadillo in a recent challenge that was put together by these fabulous Mods!

Keep the learnin' comin' and thank you for this one. It was a hoot.

Happy and safe holiday celebrations everyone!
I so wish I could get together with a really big group of people to celebrate the demise of 2020. Alas, my two kitties and I will have to drink all the Champagne ourselves. Work, work, work,
