The Anything Goes chit-chat thread (subject to tiny fine-print rules)
Thanks for the heads up, Derek. Yes, I knew about the Google ones, but as you mentioned, those always (as do the WorldCat ones) acknowledge the writer and the site that the reviews are from, unlike the 2 other links I pointed to, and I guess I'm fine with that. (With google and Worldcat, I mean)

I don't write reviews, so it's probably not necessary for me, but when I go to the setting to tick off the box for the "allow partners" etc. the whole section is grayed out. I'm not sure if users are being blocked from choosing not to share.
I was contemplating starting to write some reviews here and there if there was something I had to say, but now I'm not so sure anymore. This is something I've been going back and forth about in my mind for a while. If people are stealing reviews, maybe it's better to stick to just rating books. Not that I would write anything worthy of stealing but just in case :p

Oh ok, thanks ;). My profile viewing is set to GR members.

With regard to the name problem, maybe you could contact WorldCat and ask them to set up a program to change Traveller to Jen... I don't know, couldn't hurt to ask.

Oh, so you´re not J-Lo, after all!? ;P
Yes, I did notice that WorldCat and one other did recognize sources in that when you click on the link, it takes you to GR. But still.....
As someone who teaches, I can almost certainly say that a lot of the copying of reviews probably does come from students-I have run across reviews mistakenly posted on threads-it was obivously a case of a hs teacher requiring that students post a review on GR as a homework assignment. Others recognized it as such and requested that they post their reviews appropriately. So, from there, I could easily see students who hadn´t read the book copying someone else´s review as a way of avoiding the assignment. However, copying part of the profile........that´s just creepy.

Takes plagiarism to a whole new level, doesn't it?
Still not heard back from GR, btw.

I know. That's why I have people call me Jenn, but even that is just totally as common as dirt. :( ...and I have never liked my other name, but I've been thinking lately, that at least it's less common.

I have a good friend named Jennifer, but usually, that's all folks are allowed: Jennifer or maybe Jen. Depending on the tone of the conversation, I can get away with "Yeni Yen" bc I was her Spanish TA for one semester (that's how we met) and when she would be on digs in Mexico, they couldn't handle the J. But it's only in fun and once in a while.
My only beef with Amy is that there are usually two or three of us in the room. (Hence the Other Amy.)

Ah, that is the advantage of living in the less populated western US, :-) (Interesting that Katherine would be a Catholic name. I know a few Cathy's, but not a lot.)

Well, they're all from Irish families, you see. Try searching email global for John Dougherty and see how many pop up. The O'Learys, the Seans, the Patricks.....it goes on and on
I just HAVE to share this with you guys: https://www.facebook.com/achu.muzik/v...

Tea has it's own benefits stemming from the anti-oxidants it provides. I have 2-3 cups of coffee every day and tea about twice a week, so I'm good. :)

From what I hear, they both have their benefits, but green tea's comes with higher quantities, whereas coffee's benefits are obtained with a smaller dose (as little as one cup a day)-one's more efficient, one's better for you! You're probably better off than most of us.
I'm eggstra good - I sometimes have normal black tea - (I have everything w/out sugar) and other times, I have a mix of green tea and Rooibos tisane which I find an excellent taste combination, since the Rooibos is sweet and the green tea bitter- I find the sweet and the bitter cancels out nicely to give a very pleasing (and healthy) result! :)
PS. Linda- I've heard the optimal amount of coffee is around three cups. More than 5 does not benefit you more, but up to 3 cups does.

That's cute, but hardware maintenance looks like a nightmare!

huh! You're in UK, right? Here, they've been saying for the last couple of years that 1-2 is all you really need. I generally do one, anyway, except for days like today, when I want to force myself to get out of the house and off the pooter and work on my article! :D
I usually just can't find teas that taste any good to me, although there is a brand called Numi that makes a Mate limon that's pretty good. Oh, and this "jungle" tea called hierba luisa, which used to be hard to find here in the states....not quite lemongrass, but in the same family, I think.

Smaller cups! You know everything's bigger in America.

ooooh, yeah! Forgot about that! :P
Have never done a venti in my life....would probably be as electric as that little coffee/teapot
Hi Jennifer! Long time no see. You can, although if you only want them for your PC you can also dld a lot of them for free. I was personally attracted to the site because I ADORE all of those old illustrations they used to do for books in days of yore. You just don't find that kind of thing in books for adults these days, sadly.

I would hang. one on my wall. I have been lurking about. :)

Wow, that is awesome! I love old book illustrations.
OMG, I am still reeling from the news of
Umberto Eco's death.
This man was huge. Not only was he a novelist, but he was a professor of aesthetics who also contributed to studies of semiotics (study of symbols) and other intellectual avenues.
I can't think what a fitting tribute for such a giant would be. If anybody wants to, we could schedule a discussion for one of his works, such as for example The Name of the Rose, one of his earliest and most popular works, (btw. we've already got a discussion of his work Foucault's Pendulum, here: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/... ) but I also have enormous regard for his work in semiology and have been aiming to read his works on literature and aesthetics. Well, I suppose I could make 2016 my personal year of reading Eco.

Glad you like it Yolande! Nice to see you popping up. :)

I didn't even know he had cancer.....
..and I see that Harper Lee also passed away now, although she was Eco's senior by only 5 years at 89, she feels a lot older to me because she had not been very active recently, and Eco had been still writing and doing interviews as recently as 2015. See here for Eco: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2016...
..and here's a nice obituary: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2016...

Always sad when the canon closes for one of the great ones. (Lee's canon has been closed for years, notwithstanding the debacle over the Watchman book. That's one reason I think it does not hurt, really.)

Well, it happens, but not often (I think) and never afaik to me. But I see the occasional post in Feedback saying someone's been plagiarizing reviews.
"Okay, looks like our reviews are being "used" without our consent, and I suppose that is what part of the whole recent fight around Goodreads has been about lately."
Again, not afaik. GR's Terms have always permitted access to a portion of the review. And if you write short ones, as I tend to, maybe all of it. Google has been posting GR reviews as long as I've been here (2011), with a "more..." link after the first 300 (I think) characters. The link takes you to the real GR review.
That's what worldcat and the pirate site are both doing, but the pirate site cheats and makes the links look like they're staying on their site. THAT is against the GR terms. If flagged, GR will revoke their developer key, but they'll probably just register a new one.
