SOLVED. Sci-Fi: Moving city escaping for relativity. Engineer explores surrounding dry lands. [s]

The protagonist is a terrain engineer of a crawling/moving city, which is always on the go looking for resources and hiring "outsiders" for more physical work. He works designing the paths and bridges the city will follow, but eventually they reach an apparently non-ending body of water. He leaves the city to investigate and ends up discovering his view of reality is not correct and they are kind of living in a different relativity dimension and if he goes too far away from the city reality starts stretching out, like in a black hole (I have completely forgotten the logistics of all this). Protagonists kind of has a breakdown and I don't remember much more.
