I believe the book was written by a reporter (NPR?) who travelled around the country and wrote a chapter about each person. There was a monk who was building a chapel in the woodsy himself, a man who couldn't speak to you because he had to write down what happened every single minute of the day ,
and many others. It is not Blue Highways although similar.
