This is a book told by a cat's point of view who lives with two older women. Read it in about 1969 or early 70s. I could have sworn it was written by Edith Hamilton, but I can't find anything.

Could it be called “The Left-Behind Cat”? That book was mentioned in Ramona Quimby, Age 8, by Beverly Cleary.
It looks like the wrong book was accidentally shelved.This was Stephanie A's suggestion of The Fur Person.
