They are either brothers or cousins and the big reveal at the end is that one of them has an evil twin brother who (I think) tries to kill them at the end
I read this book in the late 80's/early 90's. I don't remember too much else, except maybe one of them dressed up as a jester and that the evil twin would escape the castle from time to time to pose as his brother.
