My husband read this book in the late 2000s or early 20teens. He said he remembers that these kids all had superpowers and they fought these green blob monsters that they thought killed people.

SPOILERS:



There were a few plot twists, most notably that the green blob monsters were not the enemy but that they took away dying people's pain, so they were always around people that died. Another twist is that the monsters were captured by the kids' mentor/teacher person and used for nefarious purposes.

This is a standalone book, likely published in the US, in English, was contemporary with the time he read it.

I'm pretty sure this is The Supernaturalist by Eoin Colfer. The blobs are called Parasites in the book.
