Kate S | 6459 comments Please post any questions about Fall's sub-challenge in this thread.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments You have 3 ways of achieving the Power of 9 in case you want/need to continue using only books you own. But an Owned Books bonus was only for summer and there will be no requirement/bonus for doing so in the Fall season.

Denise | 1804 comments Another fun sub-challenge! Before I start filling in titles, can you verify that I have understood correctly and have a plan set up to fulfill both bonuses?

Yes! You may use any century to fill in the numerals. You'll see I have thrown into the mix a couple of 19th Century reads as well as a 21st Century.

Denise | 1804 comments Great, thank you! This will be a good place for the mysteries challenge books. And I can see myself completing it three times.

I look forward to seeing your plans. I did not try the page count or author birth year options, but those would give additional mysteries challenge results.

Valerie Brown | 3263 comments Is the MPE very changeable? Should be locking in the ones I'm using for my plan?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments They are pretty stable for the page counts that would qualify (320 types are not), but you are welcome to lock in anyway.

message 9: by Valerie (last edited Aug 16, 2020 10:02AM) (new)

Valerie Brown | 3263 comments Ok, well since my plan would be in trouble if the page counts changed, I would like to lock these in.

The Assassin's Song 336 pgs
Birds Without Wings 554 pgs
The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards 272 pgs

You were good to do so. Those may well be publisher estimations of page counts so that they could change. Please note when you post that you locked in these page counts.

Valerie Brown | 3263 comments This may be a stupid question......

When I look up My Brief History I come up with the Spanish edition first (which I assume means it is the MPE) which says 126 pgs. The equivalent English edition says 127 pgs. Am I going with the Spanish edition or .....???

My Brief History is the MPE at 126 pages. It is the English edition, but the description is messed up. I'll fix that. And sorry about it's not being the 127 page edition.

Ok, thanks! I expected that answer, but I live in hope! ha, ha.....

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Valerie wrote: "I would like to lock these in please:

The Dark Vineyard (309 pgs)
Human Acts (218 pgs)

All are Ok, EXCEPT two - please note what looked like the MPE for these is the Kindle edition, and RwS uses a print edition whenever there is one available;

The Murder on the Enriqueta (212 pages, not 254)
All This I Will Give to You (478 pages, not 490)

Ok good, thank you. That is why I am asking ahead of time. Hopefully, I can find replacements for them. Thankfully it wasn't '63' which I had the darnest time finding a book for!

Valerie Brown | 3263 comments Please sub A Christmas Beginning with 190 pages.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Valerie wrote: "Please sub A Christmas Beginning with 190 pages."

Yes (and I'm glad you're not devastated. ;-) )

If nothing else, RwS teaches you to roll with the punches..... ha, ha......

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Valerie, I haven't tried to do this before! Here is a list of books in the database whose page count ends in 54.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

I see there is at least one Rex Stout on the list - Might as Well Be Dead - which, if you haven't read it, and have access, might be worth a small amount of your time.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Anyone else struggling to do a page count Power of 9, let me know.

Oh!! Thanks! I'll look. It never occurred to me to look there!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Valerie wrote: "It never occurred to me to look there!."

It's a new list. I modified an old query.

Valerie Brown | 3263 comments I don't know if it really matters, but I've been trying to read the Nero Wolfe novels in order (and I'm not there yet!).

However, I found another one that the library has....
No Groom at the Inn (154 pages)
and I can assure you if i have it put on hold for me my colleagues at the library will be having a lot of fun at my expense! Anyhow, please lock in.

Perfect! And you gave me a good laugh - not about the book, but about your colleagues!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Valerie wrote: "I've been trying to read the Nero Wolfe novels in order "

At one time, I thought it did matter. Some of the cases are referred to in later books. But I've found the references not specific enough, and my memory not good enough, that in order doesn't matter (to me).

I think in this case you are correct. I had decided to read the first ones (that I can actually get through Overdrive) in order. But after that I know I will have to take a scattershot approach based on whatever one I happen to pick up used.

message 28: by Anika (new)

Anika | 2793 comments For the numerical order bonus, does it have to be in ascending order (09, 18, 27, etc.) or can it be in consecutive descending order (90, 81, 72, etc.)?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Anika wrote: "For the numerical order bonus, does it have to be in ascending order (09, 18, 27, etc.) or can it be in consecutive descending order (90, 81, 72, etc.)?"

Either direction works - just be clear when you post, as usual.

message 30: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (walker) | 2278 comments Wait, the numerical finish also requires going in order? I hadn't realized that.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Joanna wrote: "Wait, the numerical finish also requires going in order? I hadn't realized that."

Yes, I apologize if we weren't clear. For that 50-points you will read in numerical order.

That doesn't mean reading in date chronological order, so you could read 2009, 2018, 1927, 1936, 1845, 1954, etc.

message 32: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) I first read it that we had to use at least one book from each combo, ie at least one with author birth year, at least one with publication date and at least one with page count. But then I see there is a bonus for only using one of these combos for all 10 books?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments We didn't know if people were going to have trouble accessing the library, so we wrote it in such a way that you could use one of the options or more than one. Then we added the 50-point bonus for using only one of them.

Ann (lit_chick_77) | 551 comments Can I get a Lexile on Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë?
It’s YA according to BPL, but the Lexile site has ratings all over the place, and I could not find one for the ISBN of the MPE. It looks like the <800 are adaptations, but wanted to verify. Thanks!

It's on the Canon, so it doesn't count as YA and the Lexile rule does not apply.
