Where does our idea of Hell come from? What does the concept say about God and about us?

The Bible uses several terms we interpret as references to Hell such as Gihanna, Hades, Abraham's Bosom, and a place of Fire and Brimstone. These terms are word pictures to teach a point, not technical terms for place and agenda. Is that sufficient to build a theology around?
