Hi! This book that came up searching WorldCat.org seems to be it!The Yanqui Prince by Janice Kaiser. It was published in 1994.

The heroine is a report and travels to a South American country to interview an old friend that was arrested for publishing pictures about el presidente in the newspaper. While riding in a taxi to her hotel there is a road block and she has to go to the bathroom so she goes up to a cop and tries to ask for the bathroom by calling it el bathroomo and the john. Two guys dressed as priests help her out and one of them if the leader of "el resistance" in disguise. She gets with the leader. At one point the resistance "kidnaps" her to tell "their side of the story" even thought she knows who they are. They "let" her go and she ends up staying in the president's palace and then "el resistance" does a coup.
At the end she is trying to fly back home with her editor and "el resistance" stops the plane and boards it saying someone is trying to leave the country illegally. The resistance leader gets to their seat and asks for their passports and tells the editor that his is good but the lady needs to come with them as she doesn't have an "exit visa". Once they drive away from the plane she tells him that she has to go to the bathroom as she was waiting for the plane to take off before she went.
