HELP!! I can't remember what this book is and it's driving my brain mad...

I've been trying to recall the name/series/author of a book for the last month and I've tried literally EVERY source and search engine I can think of short of the 'What's the Name of That Book?' group here on Goodreads so this is my last ditch effort before I head over there with it and I'm hoping with everything crossed that someone in here will know what it is because it's in our wheelhouse here :P...

In the series I'm trying to recall, I believe it to be book two in the series and the main character (medium or psychic - can see and speak to dead/ghosts) is now in a relationship with either a cop or detective seems to settle better in my brain. The medium is an only child of religious parents who he hasn't spoken to since he left his home town. His dad dies and shows up in ghost form on the end of the mediums bed (that he now shares with the detective) and asks the medium to return home, to please go see his mom. Medium and detective return home, stay in hotel seemingly run by another gay couple. Medium is surprised to be welcomed by a few members of the town, one of note being a guy I think he used to go to school with who now runs the local diner or place to eat and is also gay. Detectives boss ends up coming out to join them (they're friends too) and brings along his newly adopted son (street orphan he adopted that they rescued in book one). Adopted son befriends mediums mum, wants to teach her how to drive. While in the driving lesson, they hear siren for tornado or cyclone, can't remember which, and have to hightail it to the church and just make it into the shelter - but moms house sustains no damage. Also while they're there, the local sheriff asks for their help to solve the only murder they’ve ever had in the town...medium ends up solving it after locating a diary that the murdered mother wrote her observations in of her daughters behaviour. They locate the husband/father and have to tell him that not only was it his daughter who killed his wife but that the baby upstairs is also his - daughter got him drunk one night. Medium meets the killed mother/wife in the babies bedroom standing over the crib, watching over the baby.

I can't recall how this particular book ends but I know there are more books in the series, and that they all go home and the mom comes to visit.
