Read in the 1990s. She is told she has to wear a button-up shirt to lessons and she only has one but it fits snugly. I don't think she gets along with the other girls in the lessons. Lessons start in the winter- snow on the ground. By the time the spring/summer comes she enjoys the lessons and realizes she also has lost some weight (not a great subplot for middle school girls lol). It was a chapter book, in the same vein as the Saddle Club type of books.
