The books main character is a man who defended a castle under siege when the war ended instead of being ransomed back with the rest of the troops he was sold as a slave on a galley ship. He ends up getting a job as a tutor to a "princess" where he begins teaching her various things. She is to marry someone he doesn't approve of. He decides to commit death magic fully intending to die yet instead of death he gets a tumor. This tumor ends up letting him be one of the "god touched". This ability allows him to see glows around other people. He goes on a diplomatic mission to a neighboring country where he meets the prince and discovers that he was a fellow slave that he had done a favor for. He returns to his own country with a treaty only to get stabbed through the tumor which turns out to have been trapping the soul of the man he had killed with death magic as well as a goddess.
There was also something about a curse on the royal family that only someone dying three times could lift. He also marries the handmaiden of the princess. I am also pretty sure there was a sequel, not featuring the same main character. It involved the dead rising. I think. I want to say the book was released in the early to mid 90's. Any help would be appreciated.
