I read this book mid to late 2000s (2004-8) and it is a teen fiction book. I don't remember much about the plot, but the main girl somehow ends up painting the stage sets for her jr high or high school theater production. I think the show was Cinderella, but I'm not sure; Cinderella does factor into the story somehow though. She is really good at painting the sets so that they look like real castle walls from the audience, but they look "messy" up close and so either the teacher or a mean girl paints over them with basic brown paint and ruins all her hard work.
