I read the book some time around 2014-17. The book took place in America in a city (maybe Chicago?). The book was written at least after 2000, maybe mid 2000's.

A few details I can remember are that...

- The boy's friend told him that he was dying at the parade mentioned in the header.

- One of the men hanging onto the balloon fell to his death, which made the friend mention it

- The boy dated the friends older sister after he started the fundraiser.

- The book was second in a series and there wasn't a third one when I read the book.

-The friend was described as pale and had light hair. (may have been albino)
