Hello one and all.

Hope you all enjoy this summer's cream of rounds (yes yes Tech i know what you're probably thinking! ;-) ).....me, i'm hoping they'll be more on offer come the winter rounds, as i struggled to find much to offer during these unprecedented times..

Back to the our regular theme rounds once again, starting with something weird and wonderful..and quite a mouthful as it turns out. There is no way I'm gonna be able fit all this in the heading! So here it is in it's entirety courtesy of Tim:

'Freak Out! Uncut magazine's list of 101 "weirdest albums of all time". There's at least one single A-side on the list (step forward 'Scratch'). The reasons for weirdness aren't always evident from the titles alone (although the exceptions should be obvious), and there's one which you'll never find on discogs; the Merzbow at #100 is actually a written-off Mercedes previously the property of his dutch label boss, with a copy of Merzbow's album "Noisembryo" hardwired into the ignition, so it plays when the car is turned on. He tried auctioning this unique item and got zero bids!'

And the page link to find the list is:
https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/thread...

Incredibly, i appear to own just one album from that list.....I'd thought I'd have more given my musical tastes.

Noms and links in the usual fashion please, thank you.

See ya Wednesday.

Tim Franklin | 8967 comments I'll just copy in part of my reply to Jemma's question in the themes thread, as it's still relevant.

A few points...
No. 8 is a 7" single rather than an album. On this, there is a YT video which comes up when you look for this, but which has got the beginning of the track lopped off for unknown reasons. It should start with a few seconds of an R&B tune, not with the reggae riddim.
No. 26 title is Sounds Of North American Frogs
No. 40 title is The Adventures Of Kaptain Kopter And Commander Cassidy In Potatoland
No. 67 is of course New Picnic Time, not Panic as on the list!
No. 78 the title of this album is Crying Demons
No. 92 is a 4 track 12" single
No. 93 should be Oliver In The Overworld (there are two albums by this title. The Freddie one, which is the one here, and a general soundtrack one, which is not)
No. 95 is Great Googa Mooga! not Moogal
No. 100 as mentioned previously, Merzcar is a copy of Merzbow's album 'Noisembryo' hot-wired into a written-off Mercedes, so it turns on when the ignition is turned on. So, Noisembryo is what to search for.

Incidentally, the creator of Merzcar was the Swedish label owner, not Dutch. My mistake!

(For those who don't know, Zaireeka consists of four CDs which are supposed to be played simultaneously. The randomness inherent in trying to cue up four players means you can never have quite the same effect twice - assuming you can lay your hands on four players to begin with!)

Personally speaking, i cannot see what's weird about this album..but there you go. I'd love to offer up 'Gnik Nus'..but at 57 seconds long..it's a bit too short..so as a fan of mash ups....here's a cracker featuring two of my favourites from the fab four:

Tim Franklin | 8967 comments theDuke wrote: "Okay doke....in 2006 i bought a copy of 'Love' the recreated works by The Beatles, produced by father and son team George and Giles Martin. Personally speaking, i cannot see what's weird about this..."

In an attempt to warrant the inclusion of 'Love', I'll type out some of what the magazine had to say (this record got quite a bit more than some others on the list, so it'll have to be curtailed)

"Prior to 2006, there was no dispute about what the weirdest Beatles album was. It began with a song about Russia and ended with Ringo singing a lullaby after eight minutes of avant-garde hell. But at least 'The White Album', for all its bumpy continuity, gave its listeners a mere one song at a time. The concept of 'Love' ..... is that the music is heard plurally, in collage form, creating around 25 pieces by blending together elements of 120 songs known and loved throughout the world....... Listening to 'Love' is like watching a Shakespeare play in which King Lear wears a donkey's head and Romeo and Juliet fall in love on the battlefields of Agincourt. Songs that were surreal to begin with - 'Glass Onion' for instance - are cut up, reassembled and infiltrated with pithy, two second snippets of 'Hello Goodbye' and the piccolo trumpet from 'Penny Lane'. It's not technically subliminal but it's certainly rapid-fire enough to play havoc with the Beatle-attuned brain. And some of its edits really do disorientate. When Lennon sings of Mr Kite "topping the bill", the circus tent vanishes to be replaced by the giant arpeggiated coda of 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)', which seems an inexplicable musical connection to make. 'Lady Madonna', a track on which Martin goes distinctly stir-crazy, flies in the drums from 'Why Don't We Do It In The Road?', a guitar riff from 'Hey Bulldog', a bit of Billy Preston, a few notes of Eric Clapton and some piano from 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da'. You feel you ought to have a pen and paper handy to write them all down."

This list has been criticised by some for including albums that are far from being as truly weird as some (not included) releases have been, and there's truth in that. Uncut is certainly not a left-field music magazine for sure. As an example, tech's choice of Throbbing Gristle is taken from a record most would call their most conventional of all the band's glory period; perhaps that's the weird thing about it though, in the context of TG's catalogue.

message 21: by Tech XXIII (new)

Tech XXIII | 6622 comments entirely. because it blew people's expectations of continued industrial ugliness out of the water, whilst retaining subliminal blasts of darkness that were not instantly apparent. like the cover shot of t.g. in casual gear and smiling (uncharacteristically) purports to convey an air of everyday normality, but the shot was taken at beachy head, one of the uk's top suicide spots. the whole album is confounding, as well as being poptastically brilliant, which was again confounding.

message 22: by Val (new)

Val H. | 15124 comments Sussex - if you see this, I have a query about the next theme, "Great instrumental breaks". Must it be the recorded version (i.e. studio album) or can it be a clip from a live performance (which could be significantly different to the record)?

His modern dancing was downright hilariously bad.
But yeh, lots on the list aren't really "weird" at all, whatever that means. I was also thinking of nominating something from the Hüsker Dü or The Fall albums, neither of which are weird either.

Only fair to share the clip of Jimmy "dancing" with you all - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YR-W-uG...

The very notion of punk concept albums (for both Sham and Husker Du) is the weird thing, I think. 😉

theDuke | 5703 comments I guess that'll be a no then!

Let's round up the winners up to this podium then, and this week we appear to have a trippy flanked punk filled sandwich!

The top layer of this sandwich then, the only song to reach the 20s, with a healthy 22 points is 'The Four Horsemen' by Aphrodite's Child (definitely a band that warrants checking out me thinks), meaning this week's top step is awarded to......well well well..it's him again.....it's Mr Fishy Jim! Well done again sah. So Whatcha been drinking of late?!

'Filling' in the middle spot then is the punky flavoured 'Pink Turns To Blue' by Hüsker Dü, with 18 points, nominated by Nick..and finally..

...the other LSD loaded layer in the form of my nom 'Within You Without You / Tomorrow Never Knows' by The Beatles, with one point fewer.

Well done to us three, especially Mr FJ...again!

But that's not all, as we have a wooden spooner this week. The band with one too many aural receptors, Third Ear Band failed to breathe any enthusiasm from us discerning lot, with their song Air. So here's your slightly dusty (they have been in cupboard a wee while now!) timber cooking utensil Derek.

An interesting round....but, bar one or two tracks, i couldn't say any of them were particularly weird to me, but i guess that's down to individual listener. A good round non the less...nice theme Tim.

Tim Franklin | 8967 comments Enjoyed that. One extra vote would have saved TEB from being pointless. Oh well.

As for weird, maybe I should have nommed a track from David Stoughton's one and only record. That certainly steps it up a bit. 😎
