That's exactly what it was! Thanks so much for the refresher, I can't believe I forgot the title!

Glad you found your book, Ipie. Here's the link for Megan's find - Magyk by Angie Sage.

Thanks for all of the resources! I'm certain to post here again the next time I forget a book :)
So the primary point in this book is that magic is either illegal or looked down about, which is a problem for our wizard family that our are main characters. The father character I recall being a strong wizard, yet humble. Now, what;s important to note is that the mother character has had quite a few children, with our girl POV character being the youngest. I recall her being unusual in some way, but I could be wrong.
It's also important to know that this mother was going to have a son, but was carried of with the midwife claiming he was dead. It was later revealed that the boy did not, in fact, die. He was indoctrinated into the guard, and taught to resent magic. I recall him having a magic ring that was important for his character.
A few other minor details. First off, I feel like this book was written early 2000 to 2010's, but that's only based on how it was written. I recall grandma or aunt which that lived in the swamp. I believe there was also a second book where a brother comes back as a villain and kidnaps the POV girl and brings her to the desert. This final detail may not even be from this book, and might be one from a different book that I forgot, but there may have been a wizard tower that was guarded by said guard, and was raided at some point, but again, this may be from a different book.
I apologize if this was really vague, even though I read this in 2017-2018, and I read a lot of YA fantasy at the time. A lot of details may have been swapped around, but I believe that all of these are connected thought two books at most.
