Trying to find a series my mom remembers from the 60s about a young orphan boy whose job it is to protect a company-owned forest from poachers. He resides in a lumber camp in the forest and patrols the fence around the forest to check for break-ins. The daughter of the owner figures in the story and the boy refers to her as "the angel" or something similar.

Update: I found the book, it is Freckles, by Gene Stratton-Porter.
