World's without end is doing it's annual reading challenge, and announced that for 2015 it is roll your own again!
There are several challenges you can pick, many that can overlap each other.
Last year I did 12 awards in 12 months and Women Authors, which made for some good overlap.

This year they have even more, and I signed up for 5! I had already been talking about how I wanted to challenge myself to a next in series challenge, and they had one of those, called Read the Sequel. There was also I Have to Read more by that Author, a Detectives in Sci-Fi challenge, and Clear the Shelves (reducing your book pile) Lastly I signed up for the Elizabeth challenge, which though silly, will cover a couple books I am already reading for this group!
So I think I will have a lot of good overlap here! See for yourself at :

Diana (diana_zm) | 21 comments Great idea, I checked them ou and signed up for 2 (which I intend to overlap): women´s authors I never read and reading around the world - I will try to find one woman author from each different part of the world, sounds like a project!
I did look into the Elizabeth challenge, maybe I will take it up. I read Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon a few months ago and really loved it - Maggie if you read this for the Elizabeth challenge I would love to hear your thoughts on it!

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments The group is reading Remnant Population in March! I'm looking forward to it! So as it is we've got a Bear and a Moon already planned, just need to fit in a Hand (I've got one on my TBR list, but can I get it done by March?). I'm also doing the women authors challenge but I'm combining it with read-more-of-this-author (so I can read sequels as well). Combining it with around-the-world sounds like a great idea - let us know what books you find!

Lee Hawke (leeshawke) | 8 comments Some of the challenges look like a lot of fun! I don't know about putting my reading to a goal though, I'm usually a very whatever-I-feel-like-at-the-moment reader.

For those of you who have done the challenges before, any tips/words about your experiences?

message 6: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments That was my first reaction to doing challenges - I feared it would rob me of all my spontaneity. For me what's been important is to pick a challenge that truly encapsulates my reading goals, but that perhaps I might be a bit too lazy to actively work towards. So that way, instead of reading whatever my hand lands on next, or whatever is featured on the library's or book store's new releases shelf, I'm a more active chooser and planner. But then choosing a challenge that doesn't really match your personal goals can be really oppressive. I also think it's important to start small, with an easily achievable goal; the sense of accomplishment is delightful!

Lee Hawke (leeshawke) | 8 comments Thanks Alexa, definitely encouraging! I might see if I can start with a smaller one then.

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments Let us know what you choose!

right-and if some of the challenges can take any kinds of books (like the clearing the shelves and read the sequel) it makes it even simpler

message 10: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn I've signed up for the 12 Awards in 12 months challenge. That sounded pretty easy and will help to clear some books off my kindle. I'm also toying with doing the 12 detective SF/F challenge.
Last year I did the Women of Genre challenge - 12 female authors new to you - and that was great. Discovered a lot of new authors to read.

message 11: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments When I was making my list of potential reads for the Women of Genre challenge last year, I came up with over 100 really appealing potential reads! So I'm going to keep on working my way down that list for the next few years!

message 12: by Lee (new)

Lee Hawke (leeshawke) | 8 comments Ok, I'm thinking of doing the Clear the Shelves challenge, just to ease myself in. Thanks, Alexa!

both clear the shelves and read the sequel are great ones for easing in, I think. Just my first visit there I filled up both of my quotas, and could easily have doubled it on the sequel page.

message 14: by Diana (new)

Diana (diana_zm) | 21 comments For those of us who have difficulty choosing among the many challenges and are affraid to undertake too much, WWE just introduced a "level" feature in the challenges, so that you can choose whether you go for the full thing (10 books and 10 reviews) or if you choose a less ambitious goal (like 3 or 4 books, no reviews). Or, of course, if you decide that since you will read less books for a challenge you can then go and add more challenges...

so I got the Elizabeth noun challenge done! lol

message 16: by Diana (new)

Diana (diana_zm) | 21 comments Congrats, Maggie! I am working on the challenges I took on, book by book (with some side tracks to read the group books...). So far I´ve read some very good ones (I especially liked China Mountain Zhang, which I picked for the read-around-the-world challenge) and others a little disppointing, but I will stay strong!
So, did you enjoy Remnant Population? I have just re-read it for the group read this month, and in the second pass liked it even better

I really liked it a lot!i need to read some more stuff by Moon!

message 18: by LindaJ^ (new)

LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 260 comments Since I was late to pick a challenge, I went with the Definitive 1950's challenge at the lowest level - 4 books - but suspect I can do a bit better than that. I've been delving a bit into 1950's sci fi the past couple of years and enjoying it.

message 19: by Ricardo (new)

Ricardo Gomes | 1 comments Only recently got to this group.
This way of building challenges seems amazing.
I'm already doing another challenge for 2015, but as soon as I get approved in WWE I'll try and figure out what challenges I can still manage to fulfil this year.

so I just checked in, and if I finish my reading of A Scanner Darkly, I will fulfill all five challenges! Woot Woot

message 21: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn Last Year I completed the WWE Women of Genre challenge , 12 great books by female writers and this year I did the Award Winners challenge, 12 really good award winning books that I just hadn't got round to reading. I'll definitely do another one next year, not sure what yet but there are some fun categories to chose.

message 22: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments Oh, I'm so frustrated, it won't let me go in and enter my December books - that'll teach me to be too slow!

message 23: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
dang? really? I didnt finish either, but it was my own fault. I was reading a Scanner Darkly to finish up two of the challenges and realized I was actually reading Martian Time Slip....
Only I would do that!
I did finish the Elizabeth Challenge, Read the sequel, and the Detective challenge

message 24: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 302 comments Well, we just have to tell ourselves the joy is in the striving, right?

Sounds like you did pretty good, overall!

Hi Lee,

The 'WWE Pick & Mix Challenge' might be a good one for you. It's not limited to any particular thing. Just pick a bunch of books you want to read and go for it!
