SOLVED. YA Thriller book with Jekyll/Hyde theme and gay romance. [s]

Okay so I remember that it was about this boy who’s mother was studying his classmate who had apparently gone insane and shot up the school killing one of the protagonist’s friends. The boy who was the shooter gets a chip implant in his brain that’s supposed to make him good but whenever he leaves the testing facilities people are found dead. The boy grows close to the protagonist and they start falling in love but it’s revealed that the chip making him good is being turned on and off that he really is still killing people. I also recall that the boy eats a live mouse near the start at the book and the book was released with two different titles for some reason. The author was male and has written other books with other gay characters as well. (It’s killing me that I can’t remember the title, thanks for the help!)

This was a physical book, I recall the cover being silver/grey with a sort of maze pattern on it. I read it somewhere around 2019 but I’m sure it was released before that.
