Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments I'm seeing small gaps here and there and that filling in one or maybe 2 years I could see a solid decade completed. So I've given myself some mini-challenges toward completion.

Connie G (connie_g) | 1894 comments Elizabeth, you're whipping through your mystery challenge! Impressive!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Thanks, Connie. I've been reading less "serious" stuff of late. ;-)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments I have 5 books on my shelves (well, wish listed) that are also 1001 books:

The Glass Key by Dashiell Hammett
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John le Carré
Smiley's People by John le Carré
London Fields by Martin Amis
Faceless Killers by Henning Mankell

And I have read these, also 1001 and mysteries:

Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett
The Nine Tailors by Dorothy L. Sayers
The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler
The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith
To Each His Own by Leonardo Sciascia

Are there other mystery/thrillers on the 1001 list? Am I missing them?

Valerie Brown | 3262 comments The Judge and His Hangman by Friedrich Dürrenmatt jumps to mind bc I read it last Dec.

There may be others. I'll look at the list later.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Excellent! I have read that, but not marked it as mystery. Peculiar on my part. ;-)

By the way, I like Durrenmatt, and hope to read more of him.

I really liked that book of his a lot. I hope to read others of his.

Valerie Brown | 3262 comments I was just looking at the 2023 goals thread (you know.... to review the goals that I will promptly forget for 1/2 a year!); and I noticed how far along Elizabeth is with this challenge. 87 read! That's good progress.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Thanks, Valerie. I probably should be making as much effort on my 19th Century challenge. ;-)

Valerie Brown | 3262 comments I just updated my progress, and thought I would mention one that I particularly enjoyed recently - for 1941.

Traitor's Purse by Margery Allingham

Yes, I haven't read them in order but I do enjoy them!

Connie G (connie_g) | 1894 comments Thanks for the recommendation, Valerie. I read one of Allingham's excellent stories last year.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments I have been looking at titles published by Pushkin Vertigo. Not intentionally seeking out this publisher, I have read and enjoyed them in the past. Now that I look at it specifically, it is a nice overall group of titles. Some of them were originally published in English, but it looks as if most of them are from other languages. Also, the original published date varies, from the 1930s to the 2020s.

I've been working to update the GR list:

https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

from the publisher's website:

Connie G (connie_g) | 1894 comments Elizabeth, thanks for the great resource. It looks especially useful if we want to read some international titles to have some variety in our reading.

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1720 comments Wonderful. I like it!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments At the risk of getting recommendation repetitive, the Amazon daily Kindle email had some mysteries by Orenda Publishing recently. I send the link to the "who we are" page, but I note there is a menu in Books link, left.

I've added a couple of mysteries to my wish list this morning, one from Finland, one from Iceland. Always glad to see the Lost in Translation style!

Valerie Brown | 3262 comments I just finished The Unknown Quantity by Mignon G. Eberhart. I hadn't read any of her books before. It started a bit slow, but around pg 40-45 it really picked up and was good fun. The MC, Sarah, is a bit wishy-washy but I accepted that as part of being written in the early 1950s. Anyhow, if you need a book for 1953 this could be a good choice.
