Autumn (autumnjg) | 11 comments The heroine owns an orphanage. When she gets married the hero makes sure it’s still hers, not his. The villain wants the orphanage for the land because a railroad is set to come through it. Heroine won’t sell. He tries to get the hero to sell but he just says you’ll have to talk to my wife. Villain burns the orphanage down. Heroine places the orphanage in different homes within the community until it can be rebuilt. There is a confrontation between the hero and the villain, the villain falls down the side of a mountain or cliffs. Everyone thinks he’s dead but he is alive on the last page.

Autumn, around what year did you read this book? A range of years is fine.

What's the genre (which we need to add to the topic header) - e.g., historical western, adventure, adult historical romance?

Autumn (autumnjg) | 11 comments It’s set in England. I think the hero is titled? I can’t quite remember.

Autumn (autumnjg) | 11 comments I don't see it on the list. The orphanage part is just a subplot. The heroine is like the patron of the orphanage and when she marries she is worried her new husband will close it or not support it but he tells her he will make it so it's hers and not his. The villain tries to buy the orphanage from the heroine but she won't sell it. When she marries, the villain tries to now buy it from her husband thinking he now owns it. But the hero says, that's my wife's concern and she doesn't want to sell it.

So then the villain hires a bad guy to make trouble for the orphanage. He does a bunch of stuff, but finally burns it down. The villain feels bad about the fire but still tries to buy it. The heroine refuses again. I think somehow the hero finds out that the railway is coming and that's why all this trouble is happening. He ends up talking the heroine into moving the orphanage and then selling the land in question directly to the railway. He also somehow figures out who the villain is. This whole time they have only had dealings with underlings so they haven't known who is behind all the trouble. When he figures it out he ends up giving chase over a bridge of some sort, and the villain falls down over the edge. Everyone thinks he died, but in the last few pages you find out that he lived and that he took on a new identity.

It is very frustrating that I can only remember the subplot. I don't remember anything about the hero or the romance between him and the heroine.

I do remember that while the new orphanage is being built that the heroine convinces town people to take in the orphans who have been displaced even though they don't want to. A few of them end up being adopted by their foster families.

Brenna | 734 comments The Taste of Innocence. A lot of reviewers mention the orphanage, and one or two mention the railroad being the villain's motivation
