Yes it was a dog or hound type creature. The boy feared spiders especially but I think he also got common nightmares from the statues presence.
A boy 'buys?' a small dog statue that gives him nightmares and turns out to be 'cursed/alive' and feeds on fear. He can't get rid of it and when it starts to pray on his younger sibling. he conquers his fears and lets a tarantula walk over his arm. Which kills the dog statue because it eats itself to death and shatters.
