Anita wrote: "Hello and welcome Anna, I love historical fiction and The Miniaturist is nearly on the top of my " reading list " I am looking forward to it very much, did you enjoy it ?"Hi Anita, sorry to have kept you hanging - have just got back from lengthy trip abroad and am still catching up! I thought the book got off to a slow start, but rattled on at a good pace once the protagonist discovered a certain secret. The story had good cause and effect, and a soul. I enjoyed it very much.
I'm Amanda. I live in Manchester and like reading and writing. I've studied creative writing,I've self published some short stories, had articles published online and am working on some novels as well writing scripts and short stories to enter into competitions. That doesn't leave much time for reading, but I try to make time to read whenever I can. Sometimes I sleep too! :)
Hi everyone. Topaz here from the East Coast in Lincolnshire. I can't fit enough stuff into my day so sometimes I get the reading bug and other times I do other stuff (family stuff like feed them and that aswell as community volunteering). Just recently signed up to a month free Kindle Unlimited which I am really excited about. I love the instant buzz you get from downloading! I regularly download from Bookbub and like to listen to Spotify whilst having a good read. Would love to see some Unlimited read-alongs on here. In the meantime, I better get some reading done!
Hello Topaz, nice to meet you. Let us know how you go on with kindle unlimited when your month is up.
Hi Kath, Anita and Patti. Thanks for the welcome. I will check out that thread right now. Thanks Patti
Hello! Thanks for the invitation to join your group! It looks very interesting. I'm Mandy. I love reading (mostly historical, romance, classic crime such as Agatha Christie and classic authors such as Jane Austen and Charles Dickens.) I'm currently reading Winter's Children by Leah Fleming. I also love listening to audio books and have just finished listening to The Seventh Scroll, by Wilbur Smith, which was very good.I also dabble in creative writing and had a short story published in a Kindle anthology last year. My stories tend to be mysteries with a touch of the supernatural - I'm not sure why!
Hi! My name is William Burton McCormick, which is my full author name and sounds more than a bit pompous so please call me Bill! :) I am an American writer living in Riga, Latvia. I earned an MA in Novel Writing from the University of Manchester, am a member of the CWA, and I was lucky enough to be a Hawthornden Writing Fellow in Scotland, so despite my Yankee status, I've got several connections to the UK.What do I write and what do I read? Good questions. I write fiction, usually historical, and usually set in Eastern Europe. I've lived the last ten years in Ukraine, Russia, Estonia and Latvia and these places continue to inspire stories for me. I've a number of stories out in Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazines, and a historical novel that was very well received. I'm also the worst poet in the history of the English language! :)
On to better topics. Reading. I really like history, fiction and nonfiction, and also classic mystery thrillers. I think I became a writer because of reading the Maltese Falcon and the Hound of the Baskervilles back to back. I love M.R. James, Herman Melville, James Ellroy, Anton Chekhov and Alistair MacLean. Presently I am reading "A Charlie Chan Omnibus" and must admit it I find it a little slow. I'm looking for some classic detective/horror fiction to read next? Any recommendations?
And please say "hello!" Best, Bill
If you fancy detective fiction that is good but in a slightly different setting have you consideredA Rare BenedictineIt's the Cadfael chronicles, the investigations of a Monk in the time of King Stephen.

Hi everyoneI'm Jo and although I've been on Goodreads for years I've only just started using it properly and joining groups. I currently live in Ireland but hope to move over to the UK this year.
I love reading and will try any genre at least once, I recently discovered I liked physcological thrillers... who knew!!
I've recently started a facebook bookclub, we've just finished the Girl on the Train and are now starting The Insect Farm. I'm also reading The Unquiet Bones by Mel Starr. Being a medieval mystery I really didn't think I'd like it but it was lent to me by a friend and I'm actually really enjoying it. So I'll never say I won't try a genre!
My favourite types of book are ones that descibe cultures and countries so well that you feel like you're actually there. I especially love books about India and family life there.
I try to make as much time as possible to read but with a little one and a business to try and run it's not always easy... but having no tv helps!
Hi Jo, you should find yourself right at home here. Don't forget to talk about bacon ... *looks for Patti*
Hello everyone, I just found this forum and I'm very excited to be here, because there is so much information and so much to explore. I'm an author on Goodreads and had no idea that this was here. I guess I need to get out more. LOLMy books are under C.S.Crook, but you all can call me Sue.
My mother named me Carolyn Sue, and since I was the fifth of six, I guess Sue was just the simplest.
Hi Sue, Welcome. You'll find plenty talk about, and even the occasional funny!! It's really easy to spend time here - as much or little as you like, there's all sorts here.
Hi all,My name is Mandy Lee and I've just joined Goodreads as an author, but I'm also a reader. This looks like a nice place to hang out!
Welcome Mandy. Yep, definitely not a bad place to be. Talking of not bad places i see you are in Leicester. I used to work there!! Many years ago but I enjoyed it lots. My favourite customer was Corah......shows how long ago it was!!
Hello Sue and Mandy Lee, really nice to meet you, there is always lots going on round here, and always someone to chat with, both readers and authors. Welcome to you both.
Welcome Tamara, you could always add a small schnifter to the coffee, then have a second while you're early lurking!! Enjoy.
Hi Tamara, lovely to meet you, don't go lurking get straight on in, we don't bite and even share our coffee and cake, everyone welcome. As you can see we all love our ebooks and yes our book club is very cool ! Look forward to getting to know you.
Been a while since i looked in on here, so rather than miss anyone: Hi to all newbies, and welcome to a great group.
Thank you L.A., Anita and David for the warm welcome. This looks like this forum is going to be a lot more fun than watching my KPD dashboard and biting my nails. :)
Hi all.I'm Luke. I'm new to Goodreads, and in fact this is my first post (so please be nice!). I'm 40 something, based in East Anglia, and am a big fan of the crime thriller genre.
I'll be honest, like so many others I'm also an aspiring writer! Nothing published yet, and maybe there never will be, but I do have a project I'm kind of working on at the moment.
So, hi anyway. I'd love to get some UK based bookish friends if anyone's interested in adding me as one!
Thanks for reading, Luke.
