Welcome Terrance - just a small greenhouse then! Mine's big enough to keep me amused in the winter with mixed salad leaves and radishes on the go for over Christmas, the lemon tree (can't beat fresh lemons in a lemon tart - or G & T!), and the olive tree. Oh, and fresh chilies growing all year round.

There's loads to do on GR, you just need more time!

Sam (Sam_W) | 1 comments Hello, I'm Sam. I've been lurking here a while and thought it might be time to say hi.

I live in Wales with my partner and two rescue cats. I work for a small software house in one of those nebulous jobs that includes proofreading, editing, research and graphic design, among other things. I volunteer with Distributed Proofreaders, who provide a lot of the books available on Project Gutenberg. And I play a lot of video games, do a bunch of craft stuff and drink a lot of tea.

I mainly read fantasy, but have a pretty broad definition of the genre. If it's set in a different time or place, or has things that (probably!) don't exist, I usually consider it as fantasy, so it covers a pretty broad range including sci-fi and historical fiction.

I'm currently on the third Witcher novel, which I'm loving so far. I switch between reading complicated doorstops and lighter stuff for a break, although my favourites are probably the former - I love complex plots and characters with a ton of good world building, so authors like Jim Butcher, Scott Lynch and George Martin are among my favourites. I've a ton more books stacked up on my TBR, Bookbub and Kindle freebies are a dangerous combination!

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Hi, Sam. My husband reads a lot from Project Gutenberg. I'm a tea-swiller too! You'll fit right in here.

Roxanne Michelle Hi all,
Born and raised in Somerset.
Usually reading horror, thriller, crime, dystopia. Bad/good habit of reading books soon to become films and my guilty pleasure is Helen Fielding.
Often forget about GR so put the app on my phone and thought I'd join you guys to keep me in the loop.

message 1672: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Hi, Roxie. Keep your eye on 'Just finished, Just started' to see what others here are reading - and whether or not they recommend them.

John Haines (hainesy) | 8 comments Hello to all, not long joined and glad to be here. I am an avid reader of several genres: the classics, old style detectives, modern PI offerings, fantasy / sci-fi, and much much more. I look forward to discussing books on here with some of you, maybe even read along with some of you if you do those book of the month type things? I am also a self published author with stuff on Kindle, but in the past couple of years the writing has faded a little allowing reading to take priority. Cheers - John H

Shouldn't take you too long to find your way around as Kath says. I also like the old style detectives and really enjoyed the recent re-showings of Maigret, with Rowan Atkinson (amazingly) playing the lead.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Hello, newest groupites!

There's plenty of threads in the group for authors to flog their books as well as opening your own author thread. We do expect our chatty threads to remain promo-free, though.

Do have a look around. We have such fun and the more, the merrier!

John Haines (hainesy) | 8 comments Thanks to all for the warm welcome, much appreciated. On Maigret, I am still waiting to catch up on Rupert Davies' take! Then Gambon, now Atkinson. I am sorry to say 'Er Indoors' is in charge of the box (Law and Order, Lie to Me, CSI, NCIS, so very little chance of watching much). It's partly why I am on here!

message 1688: by Nick (new)

Nick Swyft | 17 comments I have never read instructions and I've just found this box to type into, so here goes.

I'm Nick Swyft and I've just had a book published on Kindle. The publisher I used directed me here, but didn't really tell me much more, so for now I'm looking around with the innocent curiosity of a hedgehog on a motorway.

So lets hit 'post'. Maybe more people will read this than my book.

message 1689: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Welcome Nick.

Well done for peeking out of the hedgerow. You'll be fine. We've got traffic calming measures in place. Okay, it's mostly not fixing the potholes but it has the same effect.

Which publisher do you use? It's nice they're aware of us.

message 1690: by Nick (new)

Nick Swyft | 17 comments Endeavour Press. They only do Kindle, but they do edit, cover design and marketing, which helps a lazy man like me!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'm glad you're pleased with them. I know our authors are always on the lookout for good publishers. There's some dodgy ones out there!

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) Hi Nick -welcome to the madhouse!

message 1696: by Nick (new)

Nick Swyft | 17 comments Thanks for the welcome everyone. As for the publishing experience I wouldn't say I was entirely pleased with Endeavour. Apart from anything else they changed the title without telling me... ah but that off topic for this thread!?

message 1697: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Little bit off topic but more importantly, the information will get lost in this thread.
I've opened a new thread within our author zone, if you'd like to share your experience there.
Others have talked of their experiences in various places in the group, but I think a dedicated thread would be rather good.

There's the link.

M.D. Hall | 11 comments Hi, I'm Martin. Not sure if it's the New Year, but I've decided to send off my short stories to various magazines, and try some publishers out. The worst that can happen is a deafening silence as I drop my coin into the well. You know the feeling: it usually follows a question to a politician on the Today programme ...
