Hi Arlene. You know what they say about words and kids! I guess as the oldest you would know for sure ..... that you don't look alike, so you're obviously right. Stay on the high ground. (I'm still looking for the typos.)

I have twin sisters and they very often dress in the same clothes - by accident - not design and I very often end up with 2 birthday cards the same.

Hi all. The name is Roger. I live in Music City, USA, Nashville TN. I am not in the music business, so I have no famous friends. However, I did see Kenny Chesney in a hotel lobby as he was walking away and I sat two seats away from Rickey Skaggs and his wife while dining in a BBQ restaurant. Oh, and shook hands with Chuck Wicks.I am an indie author with three novels and a short story available on Amazon, Smashwords, and B&N. We have two daughters (both adults) and two dogs. Our younger daughter attends Vanderbilt University and will be studying abroad at the University of London next semester. Feel free to PM me with any advice, suggestions, and/or condolences (whichever you feel appropriate) concerning her future stay in London.
No condolences for sure.
She's going to be staying in one of the safest, most vibrant, and culturally diverse cities in the world and should have the time of her life.
Good luck to her.

Confession time - I haven't got a clue who Kenny Chesney, Rickey Skaggs or Chuck Wicks are! :-)
Welcome Roger. Enjoy. I have to admit to being in the same musical dark as Flo, although I did see Pete Townsend in a hotel bar once and bought him a pint and chatted for a few minutes.
Welcome, Roger. Like Flo, I was distinctly underwhelmed by a list of people I'd never heard of. This is possibly because she and I are not only from a different culture, but different era from you.Join in on the threads wherever you feel comfortable/inspired and you'll soon get to know us - and we'll get to know you.
Kenny Chesney, Rickey Skaggs etc. are country singers (I believe) I don't enjoy country music, they seem to have a lot of award shows on American tv and that is usually where I hear their names.
Roger wrote: "Hi all. The name is Roger...Our younger daughter attends Vanderbilt University and will be studying abroad at the University of London next semester..."Hi Roger, which college of London Univ will she be going to? Joy
Helen wrote: "It is indeed Joy - or God's Country, as we call it! Do you know it?"Yes, it's just over an hour's drive from me. Joy.
Thanks for all the welcome feelings. I realize this is a UK group. I'm not just from the USA, but I'm also in the South USA. I had thought about starting off with "Hi Y'all", but I was afraid I might be drummed out of the group completely. I do look forward to getting to know all of you.Country music is a major industry in Nashville. Rickey Skaggs has been in the industry a long time (yes, I'm saying he is old). Chuck Wicks is not well know outside of Nashville. But Kenny Chesney is a powerhouse in country music.
Pete Townsend from The Who. See, I know something other than country music.
Yes, Arlene, we do have a lot of country music award shows. A couple of them take place here in Nashville. Traffic is horrible on those days.
Joy, I don't remember which college she will be in, but I will find out. She is a business major here with a minor in corporate strategies. Her classes there will follow her major.
We are quite excited for her, but also apprehensive. Lucky for us, she is not a party girl (she begins nodding off around 9:30pm) and has no interest in the late night life. Still...
UCL. Good school. Which campus?
My wife used to be a senior administrator at UCL Med school.
Your daughter will be using this a lot then...

They were making the film 'Tommy' in Portsmouth at the time, and it was about two days before the pier burned down (accidentally apparently), the night that one of the major concert / dance scenes was shot.
Hi everyone. Thought I would take the plunge and join a group on here! I am an avid reader and will read just about anything. Loved GoT series and refuse to watch the TV show (they messed with the dragons too much in season 2), and my guilty pleasures are Stephen King and Jenny Colgan. There aren't many books I have given up on (in fact just one Christian book - an Amazon freebie) that was littered with too many references to scripture for my tastes! I always have a book/ kindle with me and am lucky that I can stroll to work from the car park with my nose buried in a book and not be disturbed by people or traffic!
Looking forward to hearing what everyone is reading.
Welcome to the gang. There's a thread called Just Finished - Just Started which will give you our current reads - and what we thought of them.
Kath wrote: "...There's a thread called Just Finished - Just Started which will give you our current reads..."Hi Kath, that's really useful. Which other threads do you feel are particularly useful for newcomers? Joy
Hi Paula. Welcome to Goodreads. I'm sure you'll enjoy the interaction here. Joy, I'd recommend Reading Addicts as well.
The general chat Morning thread is good. It keeps you in touch with people in the group. We become real people to one another. Reading friends. :)
Hi everyoneI am very excited to join this group. I live in Blackpool in the UK. My book tastes are pretty varied. I will try anything that looks interesting. I grew up watching horror films and reading horror fiction. My favourite horror author has always been the master Stephen King. I wrote short stories initially and had a moderate amount of success publishing them so I graduated to writing novels. When I am not chained to my desk/pc I like going to the cinema (again no particular type of film. I like to keep an open mind) and going to gigs. Being a bit quirky I would love to have an adult size rocking horse. It would be a great stress buster when I am staring at that blank page. My ultimate goal is to give up the (very boring) day job and write full time. Thankfully, it's free to dream!
Hi, Kim, and welcome. If you love horror, look up David Haynes on Amazon. He's a member of this group and he writes some cracking stuff.

The only place I feel safe to read if I'm not sitting down is in the kitchen when I'm waiting for something easy to cook - like bacon! (stands back and waits for the stampede).

If memory serves they've probably got a good sized horse in the funfair they wouldn't miss - just put it under your arm and fit a couple of bent broom handles to it when you get home and hey presto!!

I'm not sure which campus. I have put off thinking about it too much. I looked at the library site. It looks fabulous. This is the first time I looked at a map of London. UCL is right in the thick of things, isn't it?
T4bsF (Call me Flo) wrote: "You haven't noticed the rope ladder attached to her bedroom windowsill then? :-)"
Nope, no ladder, at least not at home. At her dorm...
She literally does start nodding off at 9:30pm. I think she is a 94 year-old soul in a 20 year-old body.
Since she is going to be in downtown London, is there any advice on where she shouldn't go? Especially at night?
LOL. I lived in London for 27 years.
It is as most big cities are, fairly impersonal. Most places are safe though there are a few housing estates dotted round that you hear that it is best to avoid, but you have to go out of your way to get to them out in the suburbs.
I never felt threatened but then again I'm a bloke and huge.
London is a place where you can wander more or less where you like. Public transport is good. Most people are helpful if you want directions or help.
She can do her own thing and she'll be fine. I also have no doubt that she will make friends quickly who know the place and she will fit in as snug as a bug in a rug.
She'll be just fine.
But it's no place to grow old. Full of young people.

Hi there everyone. I'm a British author that lives in sunny Canada. I've been here for 8 years, so i have to send my writing to a friend still in England to sanity check it and make sure I'm not throwing in nonsense words like 'dumpster', 'gas' or 'high school'. Before I moved to the great white north i grew up in Coventry, studied in Bradford, lived in London and worked in Newbury.
I write just for fun, primarily because if i was relying on my writing to pay my bills i would have to survive on one Happy meal a month (assuming i can get market value for the toy...)
I'm also an avid reader so I am on the lookout for recommendations, plus it will be nice to be around people that don't want to put Z into every other word.
Hi, Craig! Lovely to meet you. See what people are reading on the Just Finished, Just Started thread in the General Chat section.

Hi there, I am not very good at introductions but here goes.... I'm Gemma and currently live in Widnes, UK but I'm originally from Stoke On Trent, UK. I'm 30 and recently married (June 2016). Living 50 miles away from any family (I don't have any friends) and currently not working, it gets pretty lonely when my husband is at work. I like to read lots of different genres but my favourites are psychological thrillers and memoirs. I don't read a great lot, I find I have to be in "the mood" but I seem to be reading a lot more just lately. Maybe it's because I don't have any Christmas shopping to do because I have already done it all.
Happy reading!
Hi Gemma, congratulations on your recent wedding, I hope you had a lovely day, would love to see a photo if you would like to post it in the group, we love happy events round here. You are a long way from your family and friends aren't you, I'm sure you will soon start to make new friends, well you already have, no need to be lonely round here as there is always someone around to chat too. As you can see there are a lot of threads ongoing so just dive in whenever you want. Lovely to meet you and welcome!
Hi Gemma and welcome. There's lots to do round here so when you need a break from reading jst try a new thread. I'm impressed with the Christmas shopping - not even started ours yet! We don't have any big towns nearby so we allocate a budget and go on a dash round Mevagissey - one go for each of us - for our own presents, and if we're still struggling for pressies for others we venture up to the shop at the Lost Gardens of Heligan, or make them fudge!
Hi Gemma and welcome! You've just made a big bunch of friends! Jump in anywhere, any time. It's rare to find a time of day when there's no one around to have a natter with.
Hi there. My name is Terrence Perera and I wish to give some details of myself.I attended Holy Cross College and the University of Ceylon in Sri Lanka. I am also a Chartered Accountant.
