I love people like that who have approached the world in their own unique fashion. I once bought some tall bearded Iris from a 97 year old man who raised the fragile flowers. He finally had to stop because his 93 year old wife was failing and he needed to take care of her. I'll never forget he wanted me to take over for him and spent an afternoon explaining flower sex:) I may still do that some day.

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) What ! have sex with flowers ? I'm sure there must be a special name for that sort of perversion.

LOL. Noooo. The flower propagation of Iris. I don't have the garden space to do that now. (sigh)

I do have to watch writing things quickly. It can get you into all kinds of trouble:)

This isn't the first time I've been a source of amusement. (sigh) I camp with an SCA group and they were trying to come up with a name for me. They wanted to call me "Runs With Scissors.," in Gaelic. I'm lucky the SCA wouldn't allow it.

message 1257: by T4bsF (Call me Flo) (new)

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) Okay - I've tried Google translate - but it doesn't know Gaelic!

A friend of mine had it translated, but I didn't save the name. The SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism ) didn't allow a name that translated to something so modern. I still haven't found a name I like. Some day.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments In Irish it comes out as "Ritheann Le Scissors".

I don't think that's what my friend had, but I bet yours sounds pretty. (I'm NOT going to share it with my friends. I keep hoping they forgot the whole episode.) If you come across any unique Irish or Scots girl's names, let me know.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Well I do know quite a few Irish names, but a lot of them have become popular outside Ireland in the last few years. Often being butchered in the process.

You could try this one if you fancy being Queen of the Banshees ;)

I saved the link. I know there's a love story in there in which Kleena plays a part:) Mmmm. Should I give my husband amunition? Queen of the Banshees. He'd never let me live that down:)

Ahhhh, she believed in serial monogamy:) I'd never seen this story before, but I'm pretty sure Maeve is common in the SCA. I wish I could hear how Fionnuala is supposed to sound. I need one of those little icons that you click on and they give your the correct pronunciation.

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) It says on Wiki that the name is anglicized as Fenella.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments http://forvo.com/search/Fionnuala/ga/

This is quite close, but I would give more emphasis on the F - it sounds like she isn't saying it.

Dawn Ireland (goodreadscomdawn_ireland) | 1026 comments T4bsF (Call me Flo) wrote: "It says on Wiki that the name is anglicized as Fenella."

I could spell it the proper way and pronounce it Fenella. I'm going to run it past my husband this evening. It's pretty. If I don't use it, she'll become a character in a book. Although, I'd have to spell it Fenella so most readers will catch how it's pronounced and that spelling would be easier for them to remember. Unless you're Irish:)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Oh yes, the Irish spelling would cause total confusion. I can just imagine it :)

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) Brilliant. My favourite clip of hers isn't available on you tube though, because of copyright. It was the piece from Carry on Screaming - where she asks "do you mind if I smoke"? This shows her at her sexiest.

I loved The Good Old Days with all it's perspicacious pulchritudinous outburts by the MC - was it Leonard Sachs?

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I really don't know. Thats the first time I've seen it. Its pretty good though.

Jane Jago Some children in our village were doing a project on native Americans at school and part of it was names. I loved some of what they came up with.

A dad got called Farts on Sofa
An old guy who isn't too friendly got Waves Stick Frowning

And so on.

Hi Jane. Don't you love the creativity of children? (LOL) They call them as they see them. I loved these! (However, I'm glad they didn't name me. Runs With Scissors was bad enough:)

Eeeeek! I always have mine crispy. I even like my hash browns well done. And I do like Canadian bacon. Yum.

So it's pronounced kweeva? I love the meaning, but I'd forget how to spell it:) You are coming up with some I've never heard before! Some day I'd love to learn Irish or Scots Gaelic.

When we camp with our SCA folks, one of our friends brings bacon he's soaked in bourbon. As his persona is French he has puffy sleeves and throws the bacon on the grill over our camp fire. I have my cell phone open, just in case. He insists he knows what he's doing, and he's sober, so I can't argue. But, puffy sleeves and fire do not go together.

The outdoor sink is nearby, so that's a good idea. I'd get to throw a bucket of water on him like Dorothy did to the witch. He's sweet, but I don't think he'll melt.
