Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I wonder if Tim will pop in to say hello to Tim?

Mick Kelly Hi everyone. My name is Mick Kelly and I'm looking for fellow feeling as I try to promote my first book on Kindle and a nearly zero budget!

I'm sure that's something you're all familiar with.

I used to be a freelance programmer and used travelled around the UK (and Europe) to do that - often spending the night in cheap hotels doing a bit of writing (and / or reading) to keep myself out of the bar! I've taken early retirement and have finished off two of my projects - one just published (you can find it on my author page, if interested) and the other one I'm looking to publish around Christmas.

One of my main questions about Kindling is --- if you write a non-genre book (not SF, not Crime not Historical etc) - what category do you put it in? Mine's just stuck in 'Fiction' at the moment which is a little general - but maybe that's a good thing. Any thoughts?

Hope to get to know you all....

message 1105: by T4bsF (Call me Flo) (new)

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) Hi Mick - has your book got any leanings at all to a genre? If not - I suppose fiction will just have to fit the bill - people will probably read the blurb and decide for themselves.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Hi Mick! You could start your author thread and give us a link to the book - we might be able to help you figure it out.

message 1107: by Mick (new)

Mick Kelly hi Flo and Gingerlilly - nice to meet you both. This is my author
Profile... https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

My book is subtitled 'Sex and Drugs and Double-entry Bookkeeping' which sums it up, really. It's about a bank manager who gets caught up with a bunch of new age hippies.

Anyone who would like a free copy - just give an email - or can I upload it to GR? Haven't explored all the facilities, yet.

message 1108: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments How about Contemporary fiction? Does that category exist?

Perhaps look to see how 'Travels with my Aunt' by Graham Greene is categorised?

message 1110: by Mick (new)

Mick Kelly Kath - yes 'Contemporary Fiction' exists - I may move it there.
Elizabeth - thanks for the Graham Greene title - looks like it might be an interesting read. The only one of Greene's I've tried is 'Our Man in Havana' - I couldn't get on with it, so didn't finish it. I'll maybe try that.

Greene's book is 'Contemporary Literary Fiction' and 'Classic Literary Fiction' - I wouldn't claim 'Literary' or 'Classic' for mine!!! - so maybe just stick with 'Contemporary Fiction'.

it's really good to talk to people about these things. Thanks everyone.

Hi Mick and welcome. I can identify with most of what you've said......apart from the staying out of the bar part!!

Best of luck with the books.

Stephen Thompson (stephenthompson) | 6 comments Hi everybody. My name is not Tim… It's Steve :-)

I'm an old, wizened reader, but a new shiny author.

Just thought I'd introduce myself to the Kindle group. I read more for education and professional development these days, but used to read a LOT of fiction. I'm semi retired, and write CVs (resumes) to keep the wolves from the door these days.

However, I've always wanted to write more substantial "stuff", so I recently self published a Kindle book "Interview Success Made Simple". It was developed from a PDF e-book I wrote years ago; it seemed the easiest way to get myself moving as an author.

I'm in the process of developing a series in the "Success Made Simple" line, and the next one "Resume Writing Success Made Simple – Secrets the Pro's Don't Want You to Know" should be out next week.

I had considered launching that on KDP Select for the five day free promotion as I did with Interview, but having read some books recently by Joanna Penn, Steve Scott and Johnny Truant think it may be more sensible to create a "lead magnet" for this purpose? Interview got to No 1 in one of the categories just after the five days free. Sales since have been very small, but this was to be expected.

I'm very new to this, so would appreciate any advice and wisdom from you guys.

There – introduced. Have a fantastic day, people. I look forward to "meeting" and bantering with you in the months to come.

message 1113: by L.A. (new)

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments Welcome Steve not Tim..........happy bantering, there's plenty of it about in all the different threads! Good luck with the Resume launch. If you find out how to make a lead magnet that works can you let me know.......quietly or they'll want one.

Stephen Thompson (stephenthompson) | 6 comments Thanks LA. Yes; that seems to be the $64,000 question. Mum will be the word I guess....but I will of course let you in on it

Jen Pattison Hi, I'm Jen and I've just plunged in with my debut as an author - a steep, scary learning curve for a non-techie! My interests are wide and varied, mainly non-fiction but I love history and good historical fiction. I'm a keen hiker and can pore over maps for hours. I'm looking forward to chatting with you all.

message 1126: by Mick (new)

Mick Kelly Hi Jen - nice to meet you. I'm a keen walker too (Lake district, mostly) and am fond of a map or two.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I love maps and mapreading. Not so keen on the walking though...

Ha ha! There is often a pub at the end of it though, handily marked on OS maps.

Thanks for the welcome Mick and Gingerlily!

T4bsF (Call me Flo) (time4bedsaidflorence) Hi Jen - Definitely with you on the Historical Fiction front - my favourite genre. Welcome !

Anita | 3313 comments Hello Jen, lots in common with you, history and historical fiction, maps, walking and I am wildlife mad too, lots to talk about, look forward to getting to know you.

Jen Pattison Thanks Flo, Kath and Anita!

message 1133: by Jane (new)

Jane Jago Yo Jen. Walking. I have a big dog so I do a bit of that.

History and lit degree.

But I'm f*****g hopeless with maps.

Be welcome. This is a cool place 2be.

message 1134: by Jen Pattison (new)

Jen Pattison Thanks Jane - maps were the only topic that interested me in my school geography lessons, I guess that never left me. Still didn't stop me from almost getting completely lost up on Kinder Scout though!

message 1135: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments Do you walk Kinder Scout often Jen ?

message 1136: by Mick (new)

Mick Kelly I've been lost on Kinder Scout as well - my guidebook said to follow a compass bearing across the top - it would have been better to have picked up a hazel twig and doused for the route....

message 1137: by Mick (new)

Mick Kelly Talking of maps. Who's read the marvellous 'Steerswoman' books by Rosemary Kirstein. If you like science fiction they are really good - the central character is a map-maker.

message 1138: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments It's easily done Mick, sometimes the books are not very helpful at all, one good thing about the popular walks is that you don't tend to go for very long till you see other walkers who know the area but if all else fails find a twig !

message 1139: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I cut my walking teeth on Kinderscout. Grew up in Manchester.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments You walk with your teeth??

message 1141: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments I think a lot of us did Kath.

message 1142: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Well I don't take em out to do it. They're all my own.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments So not too much of the Kendal Mint Cake then :)

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments Mick wrote: "Hi Jen - nice to meet you. I'm a keen walker too (Lake district, mostly) and am fond of a map or two." Hi Jen and welcome. I like walking too - South West coastal path is on my doorstep (well nearly) so I'm on it most mornings, weather permitting (I'm a dry weather walker I'm afraid). Love Kendal mint cake though - don't see it very often down here.

Chris Robb (chrisrobb) | 1408 comments Hello all,
I'm Chris. With my brother Rob, we are the Amazon self-published author Chris Robb. If you click the link you can see our Goodreads Author Page, which I have only recently (and tentatively) begun.
We are both avid readers of fiction, and our authors page relates how we began writing five years ago now.
We'd be interested to hear what anyone thinks of our books... we love reviews on Amazon or Goodreads.
Regards,
Chris

I'd like to be a dry weather walker too LA but I have a Labrador who doesn't think that would be a good idea, I do limit it to no more than 5 miles if it's pouring down and I don't set off to climb Derwent ridge or go up high on any mountains if I can help it , I do try to stay lower down.

Thanks Anita,
That black lab on your profile pic is a dead ringer for Millie, the black lab who helps out the heroine in our novel Single-Handed.

message 1149: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments She was my very very special girl who sat by my side whilst I read many, many novels, she's no longer with us, her younger sister takes her place whilst I read now. I will have to have a look at any book that contains a black Lab won't I !

Not for some time Anita as I moved away from near there, but the Peak District always has a special place in my heart.
