Kate (littlekate1) | 574 comments Hi all, I'm a 'returning person' to this group after life took over for a few years. I love reading but stopped doing it for a while and really need to get back into it. Knowing how chatty this group is, i'm pretty sure that this is the place to come to rekindle my literary passion (or level of insanity lol). So, hi all xxx

message 1004: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments The insanity's a given, Kate. let's hope we can do something about your reading mojo. Welcome back.

Thanks Kath :) is there still a monthly book club?

message 1006: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Welcome back, Kate!

Afraid we're not doing the monthly book reads anymore as there was so little interest, it wasn't worth the effort.

Have a look through the just finished, just started thread though.

We end up with a lot of shared reading and discussion in there.

You'll love reading through the morning thread, too. Or maybe not.
Loads of waffling in there. ;)

B.Y. Yan | 12 comments Hello, B.Y. Yan dropping in from the colonies - red, white and mapleleafs, mind, from the hinterlands and not down under - to see what this place is all about. Mostly because I've come to notice my favourite authors from the last hundred years seems to be mostly English types. Conan Doyle, Tolkien, and more recently Clarke. Hope to have some fun here!

The heartland of the nation - also known as Ontario - although our nation's capital pales in comparison to some others. Lovely little farmstead though, Ottawa is.

message 1021: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'm also from Ontario. Closer to Toronto, though.

As am I, these days, right on the outskirts in fact. But being saddled with one of those globe-trotting jobs means I only get to enjoy Canada for a few number of months a year. You really don't get to miss the mapleleaf and all it stands for until you're made to part from it all.

Yes. I've not been home in years.

Where are you working? I'm currently in Azerbaijan.

Thanks L.A. (Both of you), my wife is English, so I have a strong link back to the old country.

absolutely. I was involved in working on Pelgrane Press's Dying Earth role playing game. I confess to being a total Jack Vance groupie :-)
I love his Lyonesse trilogy as well

Are you sports fans? Wonder how the support is split for the rugby this weekend.

Lisa - OwlBeSatReading 🦉📚 (owlbesatreading) Hi folks, I'm new to the group and wanted to say hello. Just fired up my Kindle Fire after a mass paperback readathon, and wanted some relevant stuff on my newsfeed, especially freebies in Historical Fiction and mystery/thrillers and horror as these are my favourite genres. I'm looking for new friends, so any requests will be accepted too :)

message 1039: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Welcome Lisa!

You'll find lots of reccies in our group.

To get started, I suggest looking through our 'Just Finished, Just Started' thread.

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

It's a long thread, but don't be put off. Just dip in and out.

I also suggest signing up to Bookhippo.uk. Great freebies and special offers in there and it's run by one of our long term groupites who know what discerning readers are looking for.

Also, do spend time in our chatty threads. You'd be surprised how often we mention great books. And share lots of laughs.

Okay. Mostly we share laughs. :)

Lisa - OwlBeSatReading 🦉📚 (owlbesatreading) Thanks Patti, I'll check bookhippo out. I currently get recs from bookbub so another similar will be welcomed :)

message 1041: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've never used bookbub.

To be honest, I get most of my reccies through our group.

I much prefer getting them from people I know share my tastes. Or don't. It's nifty knowing that some of my friends in here have completely different taste in books than I so if they say they hated a book I'll probably love it.

Hang about and chat with us and you'll see what I mean.

message 1042: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments Hello Lisa, lovely to meet you, pull up a chair and get stuck in. As Patti said we have loads of book recommendations and lots of our own great authors so don't forget to check out their threads too. I'm not as good as Patti so I can't post you the link, just keep scrolling down on the group home page and you'll soon find the author thread. Anyway welcome to the group.

The little lumps under the tables ARE the beer mats...... folded up under the legs to stop it wobbling!

Lisa - OwlBeSatReading 🦉📚 (owlbesatreading) Lol, thanks for all the welcomes, i think I'm going to enjoy it here :)
Reading preferences, um, lets see... well, i do have a habit of judging a book by its cover for starters, which can be great and bad in equal measures! If the cover looks pretty, or dark and gothicy or even just feels nice to hold, I'll give it a go! (Apart from anything that is clearly yawnfest romancy chic-lit or typical YA Fantasy, not keen on that, theres too much of it!) My main weakness is Historical Fiction, particularly ww1/ww2 Britain and The Dark Age era (do love a pestilence infested yarn lol) Also, Horror, weird and questionable stuff too, im a literary boundary pusher ;) But, on the flipside, Pam Ayres' poetry! (Its a childhood thing!) So, lots really!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh, you'd like our Steve Robinson's stuff!

message 1049: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments I still like Pam Ayres poems Lisa and historical fiction too. WW2 not quite so much but I love a good murder. You will find that a lot of us enjoy similar things on here. Please make yourself feel at home.

Lisa - OwlBeSatReading 🦉📚 (owlbesatreading) I'll check out Steve Robinson's stuff for sure, thanks Patti.
